SCIENTIFIC VASTU FACTOR | EARTH’S ENERGY (PRANA) | An Architect Explains

Vastu Shastra takes into account the various natural energies which are available free of cost on the Earth and in the atmosphere. Some of them are Solar Energy from Sun, Lunar Energy from Moon, Earth Energy, Sky Energy,  Electric Energy, Magnetic Energy, Thermal Energy, Wind Energy,  Light Energy, Cosmic Energy.

WHAT IS ‘PRANA’ OR ‘COSMIC ENERGY’ AND HOW DOES IT AFFECT HUMANS?

Prana is the Sanskrit word for “vital life“. It is the notion of a vital, life-sustaining force of living beings comparable to the Chinese notion of ‘Chi’. Therefore, it is an auto-energizing force which creates a magnetic field that permeates each individual and the Cosmos.

This self-energizing force is the bond between the galaxies, the planets, humans and molecules that keeps the whole Cosmos in order. Accordingly, all beings are born through it, live by it and when they die, their individual breath dissolves into the cosmic breath. Humans use cosmic energy in their day to day activities. Furthermore, they need Cosmic energy through the day, in order not to feel exhausted and tired.

Consequently, it is worthwhile to understand this Vastu factor, it’s positive and negative effects on Man. Also it is useful to know how he can use the positive effects to advantage in the design of his dwelling.

Since Vastu is a science, every guideline is based on logic and reasoning. As an Architect, I have explained each of these guidelines rationally and scientifically under the following headings. This way, you have a choice and can decide what you want to follow or don’t instead of looking at Vastu as a superstition:

Why is Prana or Cosmic energy an important Vastu Shastra Factor?
How can you restore the balance of cosmic energy or Prana in a building?
How can the Vastu Mandala help in restoring the balance of cosmic energy or Prana in a building?
Why is it believed that cosmic energy or Prana enters a building from the North-east?

WHY IS ‘PRANA’ OR COSMIC ENERGY AN IMPORTANT VASTU SHASTRA FACTOR?

According to Vastu Shastra , there are invisible energy lines that run like a large grid across the Earth from North to South and from East to West. The electromagnetic field thus generated affects the human body at the cellular level and controls the organs.

When man erects a structure on Earth, it affects the equilibrium because the physical structure causes a break in the electromagnetic field. Hence this equilibrium has to be restored so that the the cosmic energy or Prana (read electromagnetic energy) flows harmoniously through  and around the building.

It is surprising that the Vastu pundits of ancient times knew of this ‘life-force’. As a result, “Prana” or the cosmic energy was an important Vastu factor and was taken into account while designing buildings. Thus, one of the goals of Vastu in designing is to restore balance between the building structure and the cosmos. This is because when buildings echo the underlying cosmic principles, they vibrate in harmony with the universe. Consequently these vibrations affect the inmates in a positive way creating peace, prosperity and contentment in their lives.

HOW CAN YOU RESTORE THE BALANCE OF COSMIC ENERGY “PRANA” IN BUILDINGS?

In Vastu, the movement of cosmic energy also called ‘prana’ through a 4-sided building is similar to the flow of energy across the Earth. It flows in a definite direction – from the North-East towards the South-East and North-West corners before converging in the South-West. Keeping this flow in mind, Vastu Shastra prescribes an ideal plan called the “Vastu Purusha Mandala” to ensure that the ‘prana’ or ‘cosmic energy’ moves smoothly through a building and around it.

The Vastu Purusha Mandala plan

HOW DOES THE VASTU MANDALA HELP IN RESTORING THE BALANCE OF PRANA IN A BUILDING?

The “Vastu Purusha Mandala” is a square, metaphysical plan of a house which shows the position of the rooms of a house in the eight cardinal directions. In the Vastu Mandala, the main entrance door is in the North-East to facilitate the entry of prana into the house from the North-East. Likewise, there is a central open court from which prana diffuses into all the rooms.

WHY IS IT BELIEVED THAT THE ‘PRANA’ ENTERS FROM THE NORTH-EAST CORNER?

At the crack of dawn, the Sun is in the North-East direction, in India. Then it moves to the East, South-East, South, West and North-West. Therefore, in the Vastu Mandala, the main entrance door is in the North-East corner to ensure that the early morning sunlight enters the house.

The Scientific Explanation: Every creature on Earth starts it’s activities at sunrise and goes to sleep after sunset. Therefore the Sun, assumes a lot of importance to living things. Because of the importance of sunlight to humans, the main aim of Vastu Shastra is to ensure that the inmates of a house are inadvertently exposed to the useful rays of sunlight while performing their activities, even if they are inside the house the whole day.

But during a day, people perform different activities in different rooms at different times Furthermore, the Sun’s position changes from sunrise to sunset. So to ensure that the inmates get exposed to sunlight constantly, each room in the Vastu Mandala is positioned so that it faces the Sun at the time of the day when it is most likely to be used by them.

This explains why the ‘prana’ or life-giving energy, is symbolically believed to enter from the North-East, early in the morning.

    Sir,

According to position of the Sun, from 9 PM to 3 AM the sun is in the North and in the explanation the PRANA exit through the south west. Is prana going along with sun or it takes a different route?
    Hi Surendran,
‘Prana’ or cosmic energy is a kind of energy required by living things to perform the different activities through the day. I believe this energy is connected with the Sun because the sun rays vitalize living beings. So it’s effects are most noticeable during the day and humans exposed to sun through the day feel revitalized and less lethargic. Therefore, in vastu, metaphorically, Prana is said to enter the house in the North-East since the Sun rises here and is said to exit through the South-west, the direction of Sun set.
