Our kitchen is at the center of our house. The cooking system is so that the cook looks toward south while cooking. But, due to some space constraints we were thinking of turning the gas oven towards north. The cook will look toward north while cooking. Is there any problem as per vastu shastra?

Sir,
I found your vastu tips and the clear scientific explanations given very interesting. One of the best sites on vastu if i may say so. Please keep up the good work. Thanks

HI Mr Srinivas,
Thank you for your appreciation and for taking the time to say so. However, I am a lady architect. Most people assume that if the subject is about Vastu, it must be a man.
Regards.

Dear Sir,

Your sight is very informative. I write to findout a remedy for construction of Kitchen against vastu principle.

Our house is facing the south and Kitchen is in the North-east Corner, the platform of the kitchen is on the eastern and northern wall and Gas Burner is placed on the eastern platform towards south and the sink is on the northern platform towards east and the doors are on the south & north walls - face to face. The door on the north wall (to go out) opens inside clockwise and the door on the south wall opens to the kitchen from the Living / dining room anti clockwise. Please advice Vastu Rememdy, without spending much money.
We stay in Cochin and in our Tharavadu and other houses in our native place have kitchen in the north-east direction.

Hi,
It is a wonderful explanation to vaastu science. Although we are not really too much into this until we decided to buy a house of our own.
It is small house which is West facing while all other parameters "look" to be okay, our kitchen has a common wall shared with master bed room bathroom and it is actually the place where the provision for Gas stove is provided.
If it should ideally not be the case, can we have some work around that will nullify the ill effects of sharing common wall with toilet/bathroom?
Thanks for your help !

Dear Sir,
Are vaastu principles applicable to Austalia in the same way as India? The reason is that south east direction is the designated place for placing the Kitchen as per vaastu b'cos of the sun light.. But in Australia the sunlight remains in the North through the whole day and south gets only the morning sun for a short period. if we take into account the benefits of sun rays then the kitchen should be placed in north east corner (in Australia). It will be very kind of you to eplain this.. Kind Regards Samir
Dear Samir,
I am glad you used the information that I have provided in this site in a logical manner. Since Australia is in the northern hemisphere, the sun is mostly in the North and so as you say, the vastu principles that apply to India do not hold true there. So it is best that you try to benefit from the north sun rays in all the rooms by orienting your building and the rooms that you use during the daytime, towards the North and East. Also have big windows and a lot of open space towards the North.

Dear Sir,

I’m glad to find such a site to know the right functional solutions inside a house.
Actually I’m designing a villa in the middle east.

The location of the kitchen is in South-West with one window in the south plus a door which leads me to a balcony in the north.

My questions are:
1-What are the problems that may cause with respect to the wind passage and the sunlight ?
2-What are the solutions that must be done?

Looking forward to hear from you
Best regards.

Dear Sir,

We’re in the process of building a house, kitchen is in northwest direction and our stove can be placed so cook faces west or North only. Which direction do you recommend? The main entrance is North facing and entry to kitchen is east facing. Windows in the kitchen are on the west wall.
I would greatly appreciate your help.

Dear Sir/Madam
Our house has a open kitchen layout otherwise it meets most of the vaasthu requirement except the sink placement which is at the south. Any person entering the house can clearly see the kitchen since there are no separation walls or doors . I came to know from an unknown source that open kitchen affects the health of the main female person of the house(mother/wife). Please help me in this regards. I need your feedback on this at the earliest.

regards

Your site is very much interesting. We have kitchen at SE. But is is exactly opposite to the
main door and when we are cooking the stove and whole kitches in visible to outsiders.
We have kept a curtain to the door of kitchen while entering into the kitchen from main door is it ok. Please suggest.

Regds,
Madhavi
Dear Madhavi,
Without even being aware of Vastu, you have put up a curtain in the kitchen door as you must have started feeling self-conscious when outsiders enter the house. This is why Vastu is relevant even today. It is completely based on science and logic. To prevent the situation you are in, Vastu recommends that the kitchen should not be visible from the main door. But, like i said, it is only a recommendation, not a taboo. So if you find yourself in this situation, you should think of a practical solution for the problem (the fact that you feel conscious and exposed to outsiders). I think you, Madhavi, have solved it in the best way!

Dear Sir,

I want to know that Can kitchen can be a step or two step below than the normal flooring with other parts of the house i.e. i want kitchen to be kept little down than the ground level, so we can getdown to kitchen from one or two steps

Would this be preferred in Vastu

Dear Asha,
Common sense and vastu go together and it is obvious that it is best to have all rooms with the same floor level - Because it is very easy to trip if there is a change in level, especially for older people. Moreover, it is not comfortable to carry food and other things to and from the kitchen that is at another level. So avoid it.

Hi,

I was interested in knowing the effects of a chimney/fire-place in the North side of an apartment. Are there any ill[-effects for this?

Thanks in advance.
Deepak
Hi Mr Deepak,
Normally there is constant natural light from the North direction, in countries in the Northern hemisphere. Hence it is advisable to have more windows on this side- a chimney tends to block up this side wall. However, if you feel you are getting enough light and ventilation into the room, inspite of the chimney, then there is no harm in having one in the North.

Hence it is advisable to have more windows on this side- a chimney tends to block up this side wall. However, if you feel you are getting enough light and ventilation into the room, inspite of the chimney, then there is no harm in having one in the North.

Dear sir,
Could you please teel me if we cud hve a open kitchen with dining n living rom
thank you

Dear Ms Swati,
There are no restrictions in vastu as long as there is enough light and air to each and every room. so an open kitchen is fine as long as it gets enough light and ventilation. However, it is not preferred to have an open kitchen right in front of the main door to the living, because the person in the kitchen may feel self conscious every time guests come in and if it is too close to the living room area, the exhaust fumes may be annoying to guests.

I really like your explanations. We're in the process of building a house, our stove can be placed so cook faces west or North only. Which direction do you recommend? The main entrance is North facing and entry to kitchen is east and west facing. Windows in the kitchen are on the south wall.
I would greatly appreciate your help.

thanks a lot

Dear Mr ds,
Between the two options for position of a stove, I would suggest that you go for the side that is equidistant to all areas in the kitchen. Also make sure that when you stand at the stove your shadow does not fall on the cooking. Of course this can be solved by having a hood with light above.
