SCIENTIFIC VASTU | POOJA ROOM | An Architect Explains

The Puja Room is the room where the family’s deities, idols, religious texts are kept and used exclusively for prayer, worship and meditation. It is a sacred room and the space from which all positive energy radiates to other rooms. That is the reason why, according to Vastu Shastra, it is preferable to have it in the centre of the house. However this is not always possible and so it can be located in certain auspicious directions as explained in this post.

POOJA COLLAGE
The Puja Room is the room where the family’s deities, idols are kept.

The important thing to consider regarding a Pooja/prayer room, is that it must be protected from “negative energy”. Once you have made a pooja or prayer room in your home, the room automatically starts to radiate positive energy. However, if the pooja room is left unprotected, the positive energy starts to weaken due to influence of negative energies that may be present in your home. Hence, you must make some tweaks so that it emanates positive energy in and around your home.

So, what can be done to make this possible? According to Vastu Shastra, the right placement of the pooja room, the arrangement in the room, lighting and the colours, can ensure that this room is protected from negative energy and  radiates positive energy. So to know more about making your Pooja room a vastu compliant space, read on…..

simple pooja mandir

Listed here, are some of the Vastu Guidelines for a Pooja room. Since Vastu is a science, every guideline is based on logic and reasoning.  As an Architect, I have attempted to explain each of these guidelines rationally and scientifically under the following headings, so that you have a choice and can decide what you want to follow or don’t instead of looking at Vastu as a superstition:

What Is The Best Location For A Pooja Room?
What Are The Vastu Guidelines For The Interiors of A Pooja Room?
Where Should The Idols Be Placed In A Pooja Room?
What are the Vastu guidelines for the pooja things in the Pooja Room?
What Are The Ideal Colours For A Pooja Room?
What Should Be Avoided In A pooja Room?

WHAT IS THE BEST LOCATION FOR A PUJA ROOM ACCORDING TO VASTU?
  • First choice for Pooja Room loaction: North-East Direction or the Centre of the house.
  • Second choice for Pooja Room location: East or West Directions of the house.
  • If none of these corners are available, the pooja mandir can be located in the NE corner of any room except bedrooms, toilets and store rooms.

In earlier times, a well designed, large space was exclusively reserved for prayer but today with reduced space availability, the Puja Room has become a tiny space, sometimes just a small mandir placed in the Kitchen. Whatever the size, the location of the Pooja room is the most important consideration.

Pooja mandir
If it’s not possible to have a pooja room, a pooja mandir can be used instead

If there is no space for a Puja room, the Mandir can be placed in the North-East corner of the Kitchen or any room except bedroom, store room and toilets: The Scientific Reason – In apartments it may not be possible to have a separate Puja room, but since one starts the day by entering the Kitchen, having a Puja here helps one to spend a few quiet moments in meditation.

In a big site, the Puja room can be in the Centre of the House: The Scientific Reason- The central part of a large house should be kept open to allow proper flow of air and cross ventilation. It makes sense to have a Puja room right in the middle of this court as it can be seen from all rooms and the space is utilized.

In normal sized homes, the Puja room should be in the North-East. East or West are the second best locations: The Scientific ReasonEarly at dawn, the Sun is in the North-Eastern part of the house. These hours are ideal for Yoga, meditation, prayer or study as it is very quiet and peaceful. Also, the early morning Sun’s rays have a very beneficial effect on our  health. Therefore, the North-East corner is the best position for the Puja Room/prayer room or meditation room.

The Puja Room should be in the Ground Floor and not in the Basement: The Scientific Reason – A basement is a dark and dingy place and one cannot benefit from the morning sunlight here.

The Puja Room should not be on the upper floors: The Scientific Reason – The Puja room is meant for worship or meditation and this activity is recommended for everyone, everyday, especially in the mornings when our minds are fresh and not yet corrupted by many thoughts. If the Puja room is located on an upper floor, then it can put off physically inactive people like the obese, or the elderly or the ailing, from making the trip to the Puja everyday. The climb up the steps can put them off and since it is out of sight from the commonly used rooms on the ground, one may even forget to spend a few minutes everyday, in thought about God or life!

WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES FOR THE INTERIORS OF A PUJA ROOM?

The Puja room should have a lower ceiling: One can use false ceiling for the same. The Scientific Reason – A Puja room is generally a small room and so having a low ceiling will make it appear more proportional.

Pooja room door
The pooja room door should have two shutters

Door to the Puja room should have two shutters: The Logic – When doing puja or meditating, the door is kept open outwards and can come in the way if it is one shutter.

The Puja room can have a pyramid shaped ceiling: The Scientific Reason It is known scientifically that the energy under a pyramid is extremely positive and can help in meditation.

The Pooja Room should be well ventilated and well lit and can have doors and windows in North or East walls. If windows are not possible, then bright artificial light should be provided. The Scientific ReasonThey admit the morning sunlight into the prayer room.

Keep the Puja room clean always: The Logic By cleaning the Puja room everyday, it ensures that one spends a few moments in prayer. Also it is a way of showing respect to God.

There should be a threshold at the entrance to the Puja room. The Scientific Reason – A threshold prevents ants and insects from entering and this is useful in a Puja room, as foodstuff may be offered in prayer.

For lengthy meditation, sit facing East and avoid facing the idols: If meditation is going to last for more than 15 minutes one should not sit exactly facing the idols. The Logic When meditating it is best to face East as the morning sun rays are beneficial to one’s health. If one keeps looking at the idols, it can be distracting. Moreover the energy that radiates from them can be very strong.

WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES FOR THE IDOLS AND PICTURES OF THE DEITIES IN THE PUJA ROOM?

Idols can be in the North-East, East or West walls of the Puja room. Avoid placing them on the South wall: The Scientific Reason The morning sunlight streaming in from the North-East, East and the evening light from the West will light up the idols enabling  you to see them better.

Idols should be kept at least an inch away from the wall and make sure they are not broken, cracked or disfigured: The Scientific Reason Keeping the idols away from the walls, ensures that there is proper movement of air and incense smoke through the room.

The idols should be placed at a  height, such that they are above your navel when you are praying depending on whether you prefer to stand or sit while praying. The Scientific Reason -You will be able to concentrate on the idols best, when they are at this height (neither too low down nor too high up).

The idols must be in perfect condition. They should not be broken, cracked or disfigured: The Scientific Reason – While praying to a disfigured idol, you may feel that there is no well-being because you are not  able to replace it with a perfect one. It affects your mind.

The idols must not be too big in size- they should not be more than the span of your hand from tip of your thumb to the tip of your little finger: The Scientific Reason – It is difficult to concentrate on a big idol as as you get distracted by the different parts. In case of a small idol, you can take it in wholly.

There should not be too many idols. Give away duplicates of deities and keep the Puja room uncluttered: The Logic An uncluttered space does not harbour positive energy. Also, when there are too many idols, you can get distracted while praying.

The idols can be made of stone, wood, silver, gold. Alternatively they can also be of brass, bronze or clay depending on your preference.

WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES REGARDING THE POOJA THINGS IN A POOJA ROOM?

The puja things should be stored in the South-East of the Puja room: The Scientific ReasonAll the puja stuff should be kept away from the North-East and East, so that there is no obstruction to the morning sunlight.

A cupboard lower than the idols can be placed against the South or West wall: The Scientific Reason – This way, it will not be an obstruction to the useful morning sunlight.

Incense sticks, oil for lamp, kumkum can be stored below the pooja ghar: The Scientific Reason –  It is practical to keep the regularly used items just below the pooja ghar.

You can place an Agnikund in the prayer room in South-East corner and face East while making offerings to the fire. The Scientific Reason – SE is traditionally considered the position for fire in Vastu Shastra.
The lamp should always be in front of the idol: The Scientific Reason – The idea of having a lamp is to light it and if it is placed  in front of the idols, one can see them better.

Food offerings should be placed in front of the idols: The Logic Whatever is offered to god should be always placed in front of the idol as a mark of respect. Moreover, it is less cumbersome to remove and replace if it is right in front.

WHAT ARE THE IDEAL COLOURS FOR A  PUJA ROOM ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA?

Colours in the Puja room: Can be white, light yellow or light blue. The Scientific Reason – Light colours  reflect light thus enhancing the bright and well-lit look of a space.

yellow and blue pooja room
Colours in the Pooja room should ideally be light yellows and blues

Similarly, if you are using marble or granite for the flooring or counter or shelves, make sure you use only white colour. The Scientific Reason – White marble/granite reflect and shine more than other colours.

WHAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED IN A PUJA ROOM, ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA?

Avoid having a pooja room under a staircase or in a store room: The Scientific Reason: As one climbs up or down the stairs you may feel you are trampling on the gods.

Avoid Puja mandirs in the Bedrooms. And avoid sleeping in a pooja room: The Scientific Reason – Many people may feel uncomfortable to lie around with their feet pointing towards the religious idols, as they believe it is disrespectful to god. But if there is no other choice, you could consider having a pooja mandir in the NE corner of the bedroom.

Avoid keeping broken idols or torn pictures or old idols brought from temples: The Scientific Reason Praying to a broken idol or torn image of a deity can be distracting.

Avoid a Toilet near or above the Puja Room: The Scientific Reason – A Toilet causes disturbance when people use it and also the smell can distract while one is meditating.

Avoid placing idols on the South wall of the pooja room: Because then the worshiper has to face South which is not advisable. The Scientific Reason – When a worshiper sits facing South, his feet are towards the south and his head is in the North. This causes the magnetic North of the body, namely the Head to repel the Earth’s magnetic North Pole.

Avoid idols facing each other: The Logic – The purpose of having idols in a Puja room is for one to be able to see them and meditate on them.

Avoid a bell in the Puja room: The Logic – A Puja room at home is not made to replicate a temple. It is more of a meditation room and loud sounds should be avoided.

Avoid pictures of animals or photographs of dead people in the Puja room: The Logic – While many people believe in showing respect to the dead, it is better  not to have their photos in the Puja room as they may be distracting or bring back painful memories.

Avoid pictures of wars, crimes, turbulence or any negative emotion in the Pooja room: The Reason – It is believed that these pictures unconsciously disturb are minds in a negative way.

Avoid storing or hiding money or valuables in the Puja room: The Scientific Reason – Many people may feel they are being disrespectful to God by hiding things and hiding stuff here.

Do not keep a dustbin in a pooja room: The Scientific Reason: It brings in negative energy.

This post was about the Vastu guidelines for the design of a Puja Room. The Puja room is usually adjacent to a Living Room or a pooja mandir is placed in a Kitchen.

If you want to make the rest of the rooms of your house/apartment also Vastu compliant, then go to:

To know how suitable a house is, according to Vastu Shastra, you can cross check it’s Vastu compliance with a score sheet which works as a guideline. I have recently purchased an under construction flat. I plan to make a puja room towards the north east corner of the property.I have a common bathroom coming up in the east area. However this is cramming up the living room and hence one of the suggestions was to interchange the puja room and the bathroom. Pl suggest. Also if i do the switch, the bathroom will not be in the northeast corner but will be more towards the eastern part. Pl suggest if this is doable. Also another point to consider is that if i do this switch, the bathroom for the flat above mine will be right above the puja room.
    hi K10,
Since yours is a unit in an apartment, it is better not to fiddle with the bathroom positions as the sanitary lines will have to be rerouted. All the bends are potential points of leakage. So avoid shifting the bathroom.

    Hi Gauri,
It depends on how you like it. If you dont mind seeing the pooja as soon as you enter, then go ahead. Vastu wise there is no issue

We have a circular 8 ft diameter circular pooja room projecting in the north east corner of our house. One friend recently mentioned that a circular pooj a room is not advisable? Is this correct?
    Hi Padmanabhan,
Thats true, a circular pooja room does not give the right atmosphere for prayer/meditation. It can cause a strain mentally. So create a square room inside the circle.

    Hi,
Our house main door is north-east facing with a balcony exactly opposite in the south-west direction. We are planning to place our home temple facing west (we face east while worshiping). However, in this arrangement temple will be adjacent to the bathroom wall on one side and dinning table on the other side. Is this arrangement advisable as per vastu? If not please advise appropriate arrangement. We were also considering the option of placing the temple near the balcony wall in the living room (this way mandir would be facing north-west, while we would face south-east while worshiping).
    Hi Chirag,
Both options are okay according to me. But there are some reservations regarding a bathroom wall adjacent to the pooja room. So you decide the one that is convenient for you.

    Hello Admin,
Hope you are doing good. We are planning our pooja room structure and I need little help from you on this. We plan to make the ceiling pyramid shaped. Does the pyramid need to be a closed one from base or can it start from outside the wall of pooja room? Does the pyramid need any flat but hollow ceiling below pyramid?
Also, is it really okay to have two shutter door, both together opening towards our left while opening from outside. The pooja room is adjacent to kitchen and of size 3’*4′.
    Thanks in advance.
    Hi Shweta,
The pyramid roof should not be closed from below – the inclined surfaces should be visible for the positive effect, just like in temples. The door can be a single folding one as long as it does not jut too much into the passage.

    Hi Laxmi,
It is not ideal. so better to find a small place anywhere else in the house. You may have to sacrifice the size of the room but that is better than trying to compromise with a pooja room next to a toilet and under a staircase.

    Hi Admin,

Thank you for your all the scientific clarifications regarding the Pooja room positions.I have booked a North facing door flat. It has a bed room in NE followed by dining room & kitchen in eastern side of the plan.I have 2 options for Pooja room .
    1. Placing the pooja room in adjacent to the bedroom facing west ( as a part of dining room) & idols facing west. But I heard that the wall b/w Pooja room & bedroom shouldn’t be common. Please suggest on the 1. pooja room position, 2. about Walls confusion.
    2. pooja room facing North along with idols also facing north. But i heard that the Pooja room shouldn’t be placed in south side of the flat. So would request you to clarify the same.
Also, suggest me any other suitable position for placing the Pooja room.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Amit
    Hi Amit,
Between the two positions i would prefer the first one as you will be facing East while praying. Having a common wall between the pooja and the bedroom is not such an issue.

    Sir,
I have a Puja Room in southwest direction, but its not at the extreme south-west direction of the house, its bit inside and near to the central part of the house and is placed inside a child’s bedroom, the deities faces East and we face South-west while doing puja. we are acing problems like quarrels, health problems, financial instability and poor results in academics.
It would be very grateful and helpful of you, if you can tell me if this is the right part for a puja place.
    Hi Kathey,
If you feel that the problems you are facing are due to the ill-placement of the pooja room, then change the location. You can have it anay other room . And it is preferable to face East or north while praying.

    Hello Sir,
My house is a individual house facing north.we live in first floor.main door is in north and living room in NE zone.
Kitchen is in the south east corner. Master bedroom is in south west and its attached toilet in west. Guest bedroom in north west and its attached toilet in north.Inbetween these two, is the pooja room, which is in centre west facing east.the toilet of the master bedroom is just behind the puja room, both sharing the same wall.also there is a common toilet opposite to the puja room, but not exactly opposite, little away from it.pls let me know if its a vastu defect?
so can we place a 1 inch wooden hurdle in the puja room to avoid touching the bathroom wall?or do we need to change the location of puja room.if so,pls let me know where to shift the pooja room.please help me sir to resolve the issue.also, let me know if rest of the other placements are according to vastu.
    Padmapriya
Note :pls find attached the rough sketch of my house.thanku sir n pls reply.
    Hi Padmapriya,
Yours is like a perfect house in vastu shastra terms except for the fact that the pooj a room wall is shared with a toilet. So, like you said, place a wooden wall to act like a buffer between the bathroom and the pooja room.

    Hi Rupa,
I cannot undrstand your layout. Find any small place in your home, away from the toilets and place the pooja mandir. It should not be in the way of your movement.

Due to some emergency i wants to do vastu pooja/normal grugh pravesh pooja on this month itself. Actually everybody is saying 16th july to 16th aug’16 is not good for gruh pravesh in aadi masam/karkada masam. pls guide me.
    Hi Prakasan,
A mirror in front of the mandir is not such a good idea. As for pooja dates, consult an astrologer.

The sheet to keep idols is 15 inch wide and 31inch in length; This sheet is in Dhvajay.
My question is –is this height width and length according to vastu?
    Please inform

If the height and width are comfortable for doing your pooja, then it is according to vastu.

    Hi Guru,
If you do not have any other space in the common rooms, then you can opt to have the mandir in the childrens bedroom. Just be sure that the bed position is such that the feet are not pointing towards the mandir.

Also my kitchen is placed at South west corner and burner placed at south wall. Is it ok. Kindly revert.
    Hi Arun Kumar,
The Main door is more in the SE which is fine. You can make the upper room a pooja room as you have proposed. But change the position of your hob to either East, North, or West, in that order.

I have told that big pictures of God should not keep at home that should be for temples.
    Hi Punam,
I Have not heard about this, but it makes sense as an image that is disproportionately big, will look out of place in a small pooja room. But that does not mean you cannot have big pictures. Around 12″ to 18″ in size are okay for a home pooja.

Hi. Thanks for all the valuable info. I have an enclosed balcony in the NE which extends to a terrace, also enclosed. So the original balcony ((which aligns with every balcony on the floors above. We are on the first floor and are the only ones with the terrace ) area is almost at the centre of my living room as the terrace is also furnished and a part of the living room. Have been told prayer areas should not be set up in any area that was originally and ‘external space’. Does that mean I should not put it up in the middle area which actually has a lower ceiling and a perfect niche in the NE for it? We have been advised this by a consultant but I have checked everywhere online – this aspect is not mentioned or prohibited so I’m just wondering . Thanks
    Hi Maya,
Neither have I heard of such a thing. Anyhow to me, your enclosed balcony seems to be the ideal position for a pooja room.

    Namasthe !
Thank you for the information write up.
Regarding facing south direction while doing pooja to idols, the scientific reason given is, if the person performing pooja faces south, then his Head ( body’s magnetic north ) will point North (earths geographic north) and the performer’s leg will point South (earths geographic south) . in such case you have said body magnetic north will repel earths magnetic north . How is this possible? Because earths magnetic north is actually termed the earths geographic south. Therefore, when pooja performer faces south, his body magnetic poles attract with the Earth magnetic poles scientifically. But their mutual magnetic field lines oppose each other.

    Hello,
I have purchased a north facing 2 BHK flat. It has some space left in the North East direction for balcony. When I bought this flat, I thought of utilizing this place for Pooja room facing towards West. But on consulting one of our Guruji, he suggested that let this place be balcony only, as balconies in East direction are very auspicious. And he advised me to have pooja room constructed in the middle of the house in the dining area, facing to the North. Now after reading many blogs on Pooja room vastu, I found out that deities should not face north as one has to pray and worship to the south direction facing deities. If I change the position of the deities in the pooja room, it does not look so suitable. Now I am confused, can you please help me provide a solution to this. My pooja room’s dimension are approx 3′ X 5 ‘.
Also there are 2 bathrooms in the flat, one is attached and placed in the east direction of the bedroom and other is commom and is located towards east side of the flat. I dont think, these are as per vaastu. Can u please help me out? Thanks
    Hi Mohan,
If you decided to consult a guruji, then you should have trusted him and gone by his advice. Since you are cross-checking everything on the net, you are bound to get confused. Like he said, leave the balcony as such as it admits lot of light and air. You can have a pooja room like the one suggested by your guruji provided, you are not going to spend too much time in pooja. But if not, then place the deities along the east wall, so that you can pray facing east.

    Hi Vinod,
The things in the attic should be arranged neatly and dusted periodically to allow for flow of air. There is a risk of your stored items getting covered with soot from the pooja room lamps and incense sticks. So think of this before you store items in the attic above the pooja room.

Hello sir, my main door is West. Our Master bed is in NE corner.
    1. Can I put pooja mandir in SE side of east wall.. Not exactly SE almost near east side idols facing West.
    2. Master bedroom in NE , is that ok according to vaastu?
    Please give me suggestion..
    Thanks in advance.
    Hi Vij,
You can put the pooja in the SE side of the East wall. Keep the NE corner of the bedroom free to admit natural light and air and the SW corner for the bed and wardrobes etc.

    Dear Sir,
I have a bungalow & adjusted my Puja room at the center i.e. Brahmashtan. I want to install Saibaba statue such that whenever I enter the house, I shall able to have darshan.
My entrance is towards south, so in such case I will be entering house facing North but Saibaba will be facing SOUTH. Is it OK?
Secondly I read that having Bungalow gate at South West & main door at South leads to a BIG & SERIOUS theft. Is it correct? what is the remedy?
    Abhijit
    Hi Abhijit,
Since your requirement is to see the statue as soon as you enter, the position you have mentioned is the best. You will be facing North while praying which is ideal. As for theft, I do not know… Is there any statistics that says, houses facing South are more attractive to thieves???? Don’t dwell on such superstitions and instead use your spiritual attitude to feel positivity in your house.

    Hi,
We have separate puja room and planning to Put idols on east wall. So can we use west wall for kitchen storage like grains ,rice? Or shall we plan for puja room in north east corner of Living Area(Hall)?
    Thanks,
    Virendra
    Hi Virendra,
There is no need to shift the pooja room if there is already an existing one. If you are only short of space, use the pooja for storage. But it is not ideal unless you keep it neat and tidy.

    Hello,
I own an east facing house…on north east there is a room adjacent to verandah, outside the main door.is it advisable to place pooja room at northeast outside main door.
    Hi Ram,
The NE corner is ideal for a pooja room. It should not matter that it is outside the house, unless you have some specific rituals that you follow in doing pooja.

Hello sir…we are great devotees of lord Krishna but we don’t have any place to keep him in or flat as we live in a two room flat wid one bathroom kitchen nd balcony one room is near the toilet one is bedroom nd one balcony where to keep our lord plzz help us out.
    Hi Garima,
In a house, you can definitely find a space in some room (except toilets and bathrooms) to place a picture or idol of your God. Even a protected balcony is fine. Just make sure the placement does not cramp the space around and the movement space.

    Hello,
My house main entrance is North and I have East also door. Can I keep my Pooja room on east side beside Sink by keeping partition in between. Or I should put pooja room on north east corner behind East door. The space is less on north east corner and heard that place should be empty always.
    I have attached the image.
    Thanks.
    Hi Manoj,
Place it anywhere in the house where you can access it easily and there is light and ventilation. Do not bother about the directions. Putting it beside the sink is not a good option.

    Hi Jyotsna,
If you have been convinced that a pyramid roof is not good, then avoid it. A flat roof one is also fine.

    Hi,
I am taking care of all the point. can you please advise, we are buying today huge Marble temple. we have two places to place in home one is north west corner and another is south west corner of flat. both will facing east to west direction (devotee will face towards east). the concern is NW corner has main entrance in front of it. so who ever come to home will see mandir directly which just opposite to main entrance. also there is left side wall is bathroom (only wall gate is on other side opening in bedroom). for SW corner the sunlight come directly from one side around 11:00 am onwards. the concern is this area is actually balcony which is covered and part of room now. the only concern is it not covered by below flat. hope this is OK.
    please advise.
    Regards
    Deepak
    Hi Deepak,
The NW option will make the entrance area cramped. So use the other option that is the SW corner.

    Namaste,
I have a white marble mandir touching the north east wall.Due to space constrains,in the same room washing machine n dryer were also installed. This is separated by a curtain. What do you suggest?I wanted to put a Ganesh ji picture on top of the marble Mandir. Is it Ok.Please give your valuable suggestion.
    Hi Sapna,
You have to think practically especially when there is space constraints and so your arrangement is acceptable. You can put whatever image you have faith in.

Ours is east facing house, and want to know where to place Pooja room from the below options: 1). facing west (in the east corner of the house in the hall room next to Main entrance of the house . 2).Facing West in the east corner of the house in the North-West room meant for children’s bedroom, which is used as office and no one is allowed to sleep. Is it fine please let me know. Kindly help us.
    Hi Mohan V,
The NW bedroom is preferable as it might be a bit cramped in the living room.

Please suggest what is the remedy if there is a cement cabinet above the marble puja.
    Hi Debjani,
There is nothing wrong except that it will not match with the marble pooja aesthetically speaking.
