SCIENTIFIC VASTU TIPS FOR HOUSE WARMING | An Architect Explains

Since all living spaces are said to be filled with unseen entities, the purification of the place by means of a pooja (ritual) and making it ready for occupation is a choice, most people make. Hence, a House-warming ceremony also known as Grahapravesha ceremony, is done after the completion of the building on the day the Owner occupies the building.
House warming pooja
Listed here under the following headings, are some of the Vastu Guidelines for the “grihaprvesham” or house warming ritual. Since Vastu is a science, every guideline is based on logic and reasoning. As an Architect, I have attempted to explain each of these guidelines rationally and scientifically under the following headings, so that you have a choice and can decide what you want to follow or don’t instead of looking at Vastu as a superstition:

When should the Grahapravesham or house warming ritual be done?
What are the vastu guidelines to be followed in preparation of the house warming ritual?
What are the Vastu guidelines to be followed during the Grahapravesham ritual?
What are the Vastu guidelines to be followed after the Grahapravesham ceremony?

WHEN SHOULD THE GRAHAPRAVESHA- HOUSE WARMING CEREMONY BE DONE?

On an auspicious day: After the completion of the Building, the Grahapravesha ceremony should be done on an auspicious and good day selected, after consulting a priest or astrologer. The Reasoning – Before occupying the Building, the Owner will psychologically feel that he and his family will have good health, wealth and be protected in the new dwelling if a pooja (ritual) is done before entering it.

At an auspicious time:The Vastu Pooja should be done at an auspicious time after consulting a priest. Normally it is started at night and goes on till dawn. The Reasoning – As the pooja draws to a close, and dawn breaks with the morning sunlight streaming in, it signifies the ‘dawn’ of a new beginning for the inmates.

The house construction should have been completed before the ceremony: The building should be complete in all respects, before the Grahapravesham is held.  Even the upper floors should be ready for occupation. The Reasoning According to Vastu, after the house Warming ceremony, the Owner should start living in the House and should not keep it locked. Therefore, it should be completed in all respects, as otherwise, the remaining works will cause inconvenience and will be hazardous to the health of the inmates.

WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES TO BE FOLLOWED IN PREPARATION OF THE GRAHAPRAVESHAM?

Cooking or using the toilet should be avoided before the ceremony. The Reasoning – All activities should commence only after the House has been blessed.

The building should be decorated before the Grahapravesham function

The Building should be scrupulously cleaned and decorated before the function. The main entrance door should be  decorated according to the custom of the Owner. The Reasoning – During the Grahapravesha ceremony, a higher power is invited to reside in the Building and so the building should be cleaned up. Moreover, guests who are invited will find the house inviting, if it is clean.

r

WHAT ARE THE RITUALS TO BE FOLLOWED DURING GRIHAPRAVESHAM RITUAL?

Rituals during Grahapravesham: During the ceremony, the Owner and his family enter the Building and partake of the poojas (Rituals), which the priest performs in the Centre of the Building, to the imaginary Vastu Purusha. The Reasoning – The centre of the building is the Brahmastana or the place where Brahma (the supreme one) resides. The rituals performed by the priest gives the Owner the feeling that the building has been sanctified. Some of the rituals done include:

Milk boiling over

Five essential items: for the ceremony include, Milk which represents the element Water, Incense which is symbolic of Air, Flowers that represent Earth, Fire or Light that symbolises Fire and the sound of a Bell that represents Space. The Reasoning – In this way, all the Five elements of Nature are brought together and offered to the divine power to ensure prosperity and protection of the inmates.

Boiling of milk: The family’s deities are enshrined in the Pooja Room and the lady of the house boils milk, till it overflows. The milk is shared between the family members. The Reasoning – The boiling-over of milk signifies that there will always be an (overflow) abundance of happiness, wealth and peace in the building. The sharing of milk signifies that the family should share the good and the bad always.

Sprinkling of holy water: This is followed by prayers for good health, wealth and happiness. Finally holy water is sprinkled throughout the Building to purify all the corners. The Pooja fire is allowed to burn out and lot of sweet smelling smoke is allowed to pervade the house. This signifies that the Building has been purified.

r

WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES TO BE FOLLOWED AFTER THE GRAHAPRAVESHAM RITUALS/PRAYER?

Grahapravesham lunch: After the rituals, the guests and all the workers who were involved in the construction, are treated to a lunch. The Reasoning – This is a to share the Owner’s happiness with his relatives and the workers who helped to make his dream a reality.

Gifts for the workers: The Reason – The workers engaged in the Construction are presented with gifts as a token of appreciation by the Owner.

Occupying the House: After the function, the family should from that very day, start living in the building. The Reasoning – The Grahapravesha signifies the beginning of a new life in the new Building and so the Owner and his family should stay there from that very day.

This post was about the the Grahapravesha ceremony, the final ritual to be done  after the completion of the building, just before occupying it. Also read about the other rituals that are done before construction:

hello, we bought a house from a friend , agreed to pay what he wanted and shook on it- he said he was committed to it and we scheduled the pooja and signing. however somehow the signing ended up getting delayed but was still agreed to go through within the week- we already had done the pooja and suddenly a few days after the owner says he is selling the house to try and get more money. We had already started moving in and had to take everything out. Any advice? Thanks!
    Hi Arya,
As long as there were no legal documents drawn up, I guess you cant take any action legally. A lawyer can help you. The best way to move forward is to forget this bitter experience and look out for some other place. I can only wish you luck in finding a good house.

    Hi
we are planning for house warming ceremony in this month and we wont move into the house immediately due to some constraints. Probably it takes 6 months to move into new house. My doubt is it is good to have leave house for 6 months empty after house warming ceremony or shall i postpone the ceremony to time whenever i will ready to move and stay in the new house.
Please advise. I heard so many arguments and confused with all those.

    Hi

I am from Bangalore and I getting possession of my new home on 20th July 2017. I wanted to do the Griha Pravesh pooja before starting the interiors. I see that there are no good dates for Pooja before 13th Nov’17. Is it alright to start the interiors without the Griha Pravesha pooja? Can I do the pooja after interiors completion before finally moving in?
    Please advise.

Our priest told us that while boiling milk during a house warming ceremony, it may not be good if the milk falls more towards south-west. It is always better if it falls all around or more towards East & North. Is it true and what does it mean if milk tends to falls towards south-east when kept for boiling and overflowing during a house warming ceremony?
    Hi Venkatesh,
Honestly I do not know the significance of the direction in which the milk overflows. To me it is sufficient to see the milk overflowing as it signifies an overflowing of good things in this house.

Is it mandatory to perform pooja within a year of starting the construction, because the construction is almost over but still 2 months work is pending. By the time of completion it crosses one year.
    Hi NVS,
There is no hard and fast rule that the pooja should be done within a year. Do it after the completion of the building.

House is not fully completed , please suggest what are all the main things constructed to do house warming.
Building is fully done , few more works are pending inside the home.
As we did not find any auspicious day on september as per our horoscope , we are planning to perform it on June.
    Please advice.
    Hi Sherry,
According to me it is all a matter of convenience. If june is the best time you have for the house warming, then go ahead. It is okay even if some works are pending.

We live in USA and recently signed a contract for the old home. The keys will be hand over to us by the End of May 2016. What are the other alternatives we have if there is no gruhapravesa Muhurtam until August 2016? As we have no choice other than moving into that house before August. Below are my husband’s details: Rambabu Nadakudati, Star: Pubba 4th pad, Rasi: simha
    Please advice us.

    Hi Sangeetha,
Akshaya tritya is an auspicious day, so I assume any auspicious activity can be done on this day. If you have a doubt about taking the cylinder, then take some other thing that you consider auspicious first into the house and then take the gas cylinder.

    1. If we don’t plan to stay in the newly purchased house, but plan to give it on rent, do we have to perform gruhapravesham rituals?
    2. If so, do we have to stay overnight?
    Hi,
It’s your house and so you should do the rituals and stay overnight, if suggested by your priest. Rituals help to create a positive ambience and convert a mass of bricks and stone into a space condusive for living. So do not skip the ritual. Also, personally I feel this is an occasion for you to be thankful for your acquisition.

We live in USA. I signed up for a new construction home in Feb and a day later my grand father passed away. We went ahead with the construction of the property and the property construction is going to be finished in Sept. My question is can we perform gruhapravesham within one year of the death? We were planning on performing the gruhapravesham on Dasara. But some priest say we have to wait until the first year is complete after the death and some say 6 months is fine and you can perfrom the gruhapravesham. Please advice.
    Hi Vijay,
It is all upto you. What you feel is right, is “right”. There is no need to consult 100 people and get confused. Make a decision with your family members and go ahead with the date you prefer.

    Hi,
Can we move things to the new house before grava prevesh?
    Hi Sujatha,
It is not advisable to shift your stuff before the Graha pravesh because during the pooja, the main ritual is to allow the sacred fire smoke to permeate the whole house. When you dump your things in the house, they could block the free movement of the smoke and you may not feel satisfied with the ritual.

    Hi Paridhi,
I don’t know what to advise you. Like I have said in my posts, you need to be convinced before you buy a site/property or shift into a rented place. For that you have to stand in that place alone and try to feel the vibes. If you get good vibes then just go ahead with your intitution. Death is inevitable and can happen anywhere.
