WHAT IS COLOUR?
The white sunlight that illuminates the Earth is the reason we are able to see colours. The visible light energy of the sunlight contains all the possible color variations and each has a certain wave length. Colour is perceived by us because of the reflection of the particular colour component of the sunlight to our eyes where, the photo receptors in the retina of our eye (known as cones), translate this energy into colour. Thus, when sunlight falls on an apple, it reflects the red light into our eyes while all the other colours of the sunlight are absorbed into the apple, giving us the perception of red colour.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF COLOURS ON HUMANS?
Light consists of the seven primary colour energies: VIBGYOR or Violet. Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. Each colour is associated with a particular part of our body and will affect us differently emotionally, physically, and mentally. It has been scientifically confirmed that colours affect us, though we may not be aware of it. Our mood, health, happiness are all affected by the colours around us. For example, at times we like wearing bright colours, while sometimes we prefer to wear dull ones. This is why Colour Therapy has become popular today. Here I have explained the effects of different colours on us:
RED: represents power, vitality and zest. It displays warmth and enlightens our mood the moment we look at it. It ignites passion and desire and creates excitement and enthusiasm for life. It is used in those areas where one needs excitement, warmth and elegance. However too much of red can induce aggression and violence.
ORANGE: Orange colour inspires spirituality as it represents transcendence and an otherworldly aspect of life. No wonder spiritual people wear saffron robes. It also has the ability to stimulate our appetite. It enhances communication, positive feelings, cheerfulness and interaction.
YELLOW: Yellow is associated with Sun and so is a very bright and energizing colour. It stimulates the brain and nurtures clarity of mind. Yellow also gives patience and wisdom. Hence it is recommended for all rooms where brainpower is used such as study room, office etc. This colour is however not recommended for rooms where sunlight enters directly to the room.
GREEN: Green represents harmony and peace. As green is symbolic of nature, it generates calm and inner peace in the house. It also augments intelligence. Green is good for a study room as it rejuvenates the ideas. Green goes with every other colour and makes it a natural neutral.
BROWN, GREY, DARK LUE, BLACK : It is best to avoid colours like brown, dark blue, black and grey in a study room and rooms were we want to be active because these colours make us lazy and may cause frustration and depression.
BLUE: Blue, the colour of the sky and water, is associated with nature and so naturally creates calm, tranquility and peace in the mind of the beholder. This colour is recommended for bedroom, meditation room or for a room designed for relaxing or sleeping. However, if used indiscriminately, it can produce strong feelings of melancholia and uneasiness and can be quite depressing.
PINK: Pink color reflects joy, happiness and pure feelings, essential for a happy life.
WHAT ARE THE IDEAL VASTU COLOURS PRESCRIBED FOR THE ROOMS OF A HOUSE?
Colors play a very important role in our lives and have a definite bearing on our fate. People respond to the energy of colours around them, either positively or negatively. Preferablly, colours in our built surroundings should be subtle and pleasant. They should not be very bright and stimulating. In Vastu Shastra, specific colours have been prescribed for each room. This is because each room has a specific function. For example, a Pooja room is meant for prayer and meditation and hence should have a sober and subdued colour which will not be distracting but encourage quiet thinking.
Colours can be used in a variety of ways. We can paint our walls with colours. We can wear clothes with colours of our preference; we can drink solarised water in coloured glasses. We can use curtains, carpets and furniture with colours of our liking.
Here I have explained the specific colours to be used in each room of the house in order to enhance the atmosphere of the specific room and make it useful in our daily life for bringing prosperity.

BEDROOM : Pink is the ideal colour for the master bedroom. The secondary colours can be light green and light blue as these are colours of hope and cultivation. Red should not be used in the bedroom, as it is too energizing though pink or red sheets and blankets are suitable for those who want to get married or for newly weds to ensure marital bliss. The Reasoning - When used in abundance in a bedroom, red can be overpowering and stressful for people who are anxious by nature. However, plain white sheets or white sheets with flowers or colourful designs are fine. Yellow is fine for the elderly. But dark blue should be avoided. The Reasoning - Yellow is a soothing colour while dark colours can be gloomy especially for elderly people who spend a lot of time in the Bedroom.
STUDY ROOM/CHILDREN’S BEDROOM: Green colour should be used as it encourages concentration. Black is fine for furniture to encourage deep thoughts. Parents can have blue coloured bedrooms for their children who tend to be aggressive. The Reasoning – Since Children’s bedrooms are used by young children for study, they should have a colour that generates calm and peace for a cool head.

LIVING ROOM: In the living room, bright colours, shades, and patterns can be used. The best colours are yellow, beige or tan, or green or blue. The Reasoning - As it is the place to entertain guests, it should be lively and conducive for pleasant conversations.
DINING ROOM: Orange is the best colour for the dining room as it is known to stimulate the appetite. Peach colour can also be used, as it gives a cool affect and is a shade of orange. Secondary colours can be pinks, greens, and blues. Avoid black or white or a mixture of black and white as these colours are less conducive to enjoying eating. The Reasoning - The dining room, where the family eats together and entertains, should have colours that stimulate appetite and conversation.
KITCHEN: For the kitchen, white is the best colour, it show off the colours of food, as if it were a blank canvas upon which the cook creates a meal of red tomatoes, green peppers, yellow squash. Besides it is also the colour of purity and cleanliness. The Reasoning - The kitchen tends to get dirty with all the grease and food. Hence it is better to have light colours that will not hide the dirt. Moreover, light shades and white help to brighten up the kitchen and enable us to see better while cutting and cooking.
LIBRARY: The best colour, however, depends on the type of books that the residents like to read. If they prefer serious books, brown is an appropriate shade. For less serious readers, pale blue, light green or pink are good.
WHAT ARE THE VASTU COLOURS PRESCRIBED FOR EACH DIRECTION OF THE HOUSE?
Vastu Shastra recommends the use of specific colours in each of the cardinal directions. This is because each direction is goverened by a planet which is in turn represented by a specific colour. Scientifically this can be explained by the fact that, we perceive colour only because of sunlight and the intensity of sunlight is different in different directions. Hence it is preferrable to have certain colours in each direction.
It is advisable to use the recommended colours for different directions to enhance good luck, health and wealth.

SOUTH-EAST : ruled by Venus. The preferred colour is white which gives beauty, charm and luck. The Reasoning - This corner is reserved for the Kitchen, for which white is preferred colour.
SOUTH : is ruled by Mars. The ideal colour here is red which gives aggression. However this is preferred only for fire stations or police stations and not for houses.
SOUTH-WEST: is ruled by Rahu. The suitable colour here is blue which gives courage. The Reasoning - The Master Bedroom is located in this corner and so a soothing colour like blue is preferred.
WEST : is ruled by Saturn. The colour prefered here is grey which gives satisfaction and maturity. The Reasoning - The Toilets are usually kept in the West and the choice of colour is grey.
NORTH : is ruled by Mercury. The colour suitable for this direction is green as this gives intelligence and wealth. The Reasoning – The North is reserved for the Living room and here, Green is suitable.
NORTH-WEST: is governed by the moon. The ideal colour here is white as it denotes purity and wealth. The Reasoning - The North-West corner is used for the Kitchen and so White is a natural choice.
NORTH-EAST: is represented by Jupiter. The ideal colour here is yellow as it stands for piety and purity. The Reasoning - The North-East corner is ideal for a pooja room or meditation room and so, yellow is the best colour.
