Damp Proof Course – A course consisting of some appropriate water proofing material provided to prevent penetration of dampness or moisture- built into the wall of a building to prevent moisture from rising from the foundation.

Dadaism – Anti art establishment movement of the early 20th century that had little direct influence on architecture.
Dado – The cubic block forming the body of a pedestal, a skirting of wood, wall paper or paint work along the lower part of the wall of a room.
DDT – Dichloro -diphenyl trichloro ethane, a white, odourless powder used to kill insects.
De Stijl – Dutch geometric abstract movement emphasizing the unity of all arts named after a magazine, it above all gave a new dynamic to community housing projects.


De constructivism – Post Modernist mainly US movement to banish formal preconceptions about building styles while retaining modern building techniques and materials.
Detached Building – A building whose walls and roofs are independendent of any other building with open spaces on all sides as specified.
Dome – A structure raised above a large building, usually hemispherical, a large cupola.
Door – Usual entrance into an enclosed space, the moveable frame by which the entrance can be closed, a means of approach or access.
Doric Order – Simplest-least decorated of the three Classical orders.

Dormer – A bedroom.
Dormer Window – A small window with a gable or triangular top, projecting from a sloping roof.
Dormitory – Large sleeping chamber with many beds.
Drain – A line of pipes including all fittings and equipment such as manhole, inspection chamber, taps, gullies and floor traps used for drainage of buildings, or yards appurtenant to buildings, within the same cartilage. Drain shall also include open channels used for conveying surface water.
Drainage – The removal of any liquid by a system constructed for this purpose.
Drum – Circular or polygonal wall that supports a dome.
Dry Joint – Joint without mortar between the stones in a wall.
Duct – A shaft or a small opening used for mainly services and little ventilation and lighting.
Dungeon – The principal tower of a castle, a close dark prison, cell underground.
Duplex – Two fold, double.
