In multi-level houses, there may be a Basement which is accessed through the Staircase. The basement is usually meant for car parking or for storage etc. Sometimes the basement is used as a family room and for indoor games.

Here, I have explained the Vastu Guidelines for Basements. Since Vastu Shastra is a science, every guideline is based on logic and reasoning. As an Architect, I have attempted to explain each of these guidelines rationally and scientifically under the following headings, so that you have a choice and can decide what you want to follow or not instead of looking at Vastu as a superstition:

What are the Vastu guidelines for the location of basements?
What are the Vastu guidelines for basements?
What are the ideal colours for basements?

Avoid basements for living areas: The Scientific Reason – Generally basements are dark as they are below ground and sunrays do not enter them. In addition they are damp as there is a tendency for water to seep through the walls from the surrounding soil. This highly reduces the basement’s positive effect on the persons living in them.

It is ideal to have only part-basement, and that too, only in the North-East or East of the house: If there is a basement, it should not be located only on the South, South-East, or West sides. It should be extended into the North-East part. The Scientific Reason – Some sunlight will enter from the East in the mornings and constantly from the North if the basement is in the North-East corner. On the other hand, if the North-East corner is not used for a basement, then there will be hardly any light entering into the basement.

Keep at least one-fourth of the Basement above ground: The Scientific Reason – By keeping a part of the basement above the ground, one can have some windows in the portion above ground which can then light up and keep the basement dry.

Locate any heavy equipment in the South and West parts of the Basement: The Scientific Reason – According to Vastu principles, the South-West part of the building is higher than the rest of the house, (as it blocks out the hot evening sunlight to the rest of the house). Therefore, the structural foundation in the SW is designed to support more load and hence the heavier things can be kept in this corner.

Some sunlight should be allowed into the Basement

Keep the height of the Basement walls at least 9 feet: The Scientific Reason – As the basement is below the ground, people have a tendency to excavate less (as it is expensive) and end up having very low height space. This then is not very comfortable for tall people as they feel the ceiling, right above their head. Also, if cars are parked here, the exhaust fumes tend to stagnate within the space as there is less roof height.

The Basement wall colours: Paint the basement white and not a dark colour.  The Scientific Reason- White colour reflects light the most and this is very essential in a dark space like a basement as it allows one to see around clearly.

The Basement should have light colours

I have a basement in the NE as well as SE of my under construction house which faces north. The NE and East ground level inside the plot is 3/4 below road level, which road slopes towards the east. We intend using the SE portion, which has a door in the mid-east, as a servants room and the NE room as a store room. The NE of the basement is below a balcony and is to be used for parking. I also have a sump towards the north of the basement which is below the entrance of the house, with a vacuum of 2 1/2 metres between the sump and the entrance ground level, where a water pump, meter is placed. Is this alright as per vaastu?
    Hi Alisha,
From the light and ventilation point of view, your proposals seem to be fine. Which means that from a Vastu angle also, they are right.

thanks for info posted in this site.

I’m really enlightened by the guidance and your logical scientific reasoning…!

I have an basement in my individual house, which extends from border to border of the site area, i was very confused when i got to know that the cellar is not supposed to be in southern part and south-west part, and infact asked me to close it partly.
But your scientific reasoning has cleared my doubt,
Is there any vaasthu dosha / effect on family or business by having full basement….??
Also is there any effect on kids livings in north-west bedroom with an door in the south-east corner opening towards east ( eastern side of south-east) .
    Kindly answer and guide me
    thank you
    Hi K Pradeeep,
Please do not entertain any advice that tells you to close down something. Instead think of ways of correcting any flaws. Having a basement in the South or South west will not affect you adversely. Only make sure there is ample light and ventilation in these corners.
According to vastu, the NW is the best place for a children’s bedroom.

Sir , I have constructed a basement in South=west corner of my plot , which is used as workshop . kindly advise , what is the remedie for this , so that its ill effects are not effected to bussiness.
    Hi Purshotam Behl,
The SW is the ideal corner for a workshop according to Vastu.

Sir, I have built servent quarters in north east basement of my house. Is that correct?
    Hi Sujatha,
It is ideal that the servant’s quarters are in the North-East of your basement as it will be beneficial for the maid. Having a healthy and happy maid is advantageous.

Sir, Plz suggest the type of painting or pictures to be hung on the wall of basement which is under the stairs to basement on the south east direction.
    Hi Avtar Singh,
Not just the basement, in any space, hang pictures that depict calmness and tranquility and the ones that appeal to your aesthetic sense.

Sir, I have purchased a basement floor of the South Facing Building. The staircase running from south to basement in the centre of the building. Now the Ground Floor owner is requesting me to shift the stairs either West to East on the Western side (south-West corner) and East to North on the South East Corner. Which is better.
In my opinion, i was thinking to shift the same south entrance from centre to east so that the same staircase going down from south to north on the south east corner.
Can you suggest me how to shift the going down stairs to my basement floor and from which side to which side we should get down the stairs to the basement floor
    with regards,
    Hi Mohan Rao,
Your idea to shift the staircase and entrance to the South-East is the best option.

I have a exterior door that leads to a basement/crawl space in the South west sector of my house. The door faces south, and is a bilco door. There is only that one door for access. What can I do to cure it’s ill effects.
    Hi Joshua Gordon,
According to vastu, the position of your door to your basement in the SW is not ideal. But don’t fret about it. It is the only available position and so, it is right.

I have a Showroom which is North Facing, Its a Rectangular Showroom of width 12 Feet and total length of showroom is 60 feet, i have a split at 30 feets and one basement in later 30 feets of showroom i.e southern part of showroom is having basement and stairs are going down from East south towards basement, this is 7 feet from ground level.
and we have a upside portion which is 4 feets from ground level.
and our Cash counter is in North West of the showroom at ground level.
Please suggest if this basement is ok for us or shall be repudiate this structure, if yes can you please suggest some possible remediation.
    Hi Udit Ahuja,
In commercial buildings, basements are common and it is not practical to look at vastu shastra for their positioning. In a north facing site, it is better to have the basement towards the back in the South. So I don’t see any problem. Only make sure that there is lot of light entering the basement through the 4′ part that is above ground.

  • March 2, 2015 at 2:02 pm

    Hi Sir,
We are planning on purchasing a North facing house.
Everything in the house is as per vastu, but unfortunately the garage is falling into the NE corner of the house
We have a three car garage in the NE corner of the house, the garage comes with a shutter, as per vastu is this permissable?
Also is it OK if we leave the slot closest to the NE corner always empty, I mean without putting a car there
The house comes with a full basement, but they don’t dig below the garage, so the northeast area in the basement (i.e.right below the garage) will be closed or cut, as per vastu is this permissable?
Please advice and thanks in advance for all your help!
    Thanks, Suchi.
    Hi Sucharitha,
If it was on open porch/garage it would have been better as the light can filter into the house through the porch. You can park the car out during the day or avoid it all together in the NE corner provided there are windows to your house in this corner. If there are no windows in the NE corner, then all this will not matter. Though the basement does not extend into the NE if there are enough windows/ventilators in the basement, then it is okay.

hi..I want to start a polyclinic..n for dat wat kind of basement should I take so dat busuness can flourish
    Hi Alka,
Ideally, a basement is not the best space but if it is well ventilated, well-lit and easily accessible you can use it.

  • March 21, 2015 at 11:25 pm

We have a cellar in our South portion of the house. The staircase runs from South direction. Somebody told me that we should now have cellar in South portion of the house. We are not using it . It is absolutely vacant. We feel like closing it. Kindly suggest.
    With regards
    Hi Prasad,
No harm in having a cellar anywhere as long as it is well ventilated. If you close it, close it from all sides but make sure that it is water tight. if there is water seepage and you have closed it, it can affect the rest of the building. I suggest you should not close it but allow ventilation through it..

  • May 8, 2015 at 3:02 am

Hello sir ,we would like to construct a house with closed cellar like a duplex house upper portion will be little above the ground remaining part in the underground.we would like to keep the extra bed rooms and small living area in that the top two bed rooms and kitchen hall, suggest me how far is good as per vaasthu,if u have any plans in that model please send me.
    Hi Sireesha,
It is always preferable not to have living spaces in a basement. And from your description, the basement may not have much light or ventilation as the ground floor is only a ‘little’ above the ground level. But if you still want to have it with this configuration, then make the ground floor slab at least 6′ above ground, so that the basement portion can have at least4′-5′ long windows.

  • May 19, 2015 at 5:57 am

    Dear Sir,
I have finalized a Cellar Space for my new office. The cellar is wall to wall, rectangualr, 3/4ths below ground, more than 9 ft height, painted white, Power pole on the NE exterior, Sump at NE inside, Wall of the basement opposite Main door (which in basements is unavoidable), steps to basement west-east on NW. The NE part of the building faces a perpendicular road (3-road junction). Is this okay for a business?
    Hi Ravikiran,
Generally a perpendicular road is not preferable. But since your office is in the basement, it does not matter. Be cautioned that the sound of water flowing into the sump can be heard if it is inside your office. Also check whether there have been water overflow problems in the past, because then your office furniture and partitions will get affected.

though i consider vaasthu as scientific n ergonomic way of living as envisaged by your article the continuous disturbances in life forcing me to think otherwise these days as i m going through hell lot of difficulties inspite of my best efforts/prayers n plans then every one pointing finger towards vaasthu of house,
point 1 : The house is combined effort of my father, younger brother who settled in US ,and is in the name of my mom whom will vaasthu effect?
point2: it is a recatngular plot with roads on north and west north 45 ft and 65 west the plot is 10 feet below from north road but 1o feet above on SW 4ft above towards NW i.e road is slant from north to south on west ., the adjacent plot owners constructed heavy walls and filled with earth but i prefferred a slab making it as basement and considering the slab as ground constructed a duplex rest of all the things are perfectly as per vaasthu including sump, overhead tank etc.,but as i cant do any thing about the road out side what best remedy i should adopt.
point3.from north entrance i’ve not covered it with slab instead i constructed a ramp with sufficient width for regular entrance and front side i.e north side basement which is open to sky put a garden in basement is it wrong , shd i ve to cover the entire area and separate it with main bldng as there is gate alreday on NW side.
Among all the gurus of vaasthu you appear to be rational and pragmatic hence request you to give me a proper advise even if required aproffessional one
    thanking you
    Hi KSR,
It is a good idea to make use of such a steep slope by creating a basement instead of filling it up with earth. I am a bit confused with your description and am not able to understand your concerns. According to me it all seems fine. A badly planned, ill-ventilated and dimly-lit house (which translates to a Vastu dosh house) will affect all the inmates and not only the owner. So I suggest you look into the overall layout of your house – Is there a free flow from room to room? Is there too much clutter and useless stuff accumulated over the years? Is the light and ventilation bad in any of the rooms? Is there any underlying tension regarding the ownership of the house? You should address all these issues and allow the house to take on a new life. Good luck.

    Dear sir,
I have first floor flat. door on the north wall and south windows.
sw master bedroom, ne toilet we are not using anymore, only for bathing. SE room for office purpose, SSW toilet, SSE kitchen, south hall.
my concern is – we have ground floor parking with pillars. i heard house on pillar destroy people living in it. please suggest some remedy as my house on first floor
    Hi Ruby,
Your internal arrangement seems okay according to Vastu Shastra. The only advantage I see in a house with pillars is that it does not look like a house and is not as aesthetic as one which is at ground level. But you could probably build outer walls to enclose the ground floor, so that the pillars are not seen.

Sir I wish to now unitise my south facing basement as my new home by constructing new kitchen and toilets …..can you suggest best options and whether basement homes are suitable for happy living or not?
My staircase runs in centre of square plot of 900sqft plot multi-storey building with colony sewer in northeast side of my plot which I can’t change at all…… basement is lying empty for past 4 years now after successfully utilising it for my office for 6 years starting 2005.
Actually it’s lower ground floor 7 steps down not basement as such with 3 side open windows but fully closed west section.I am very confused and stressed whether it will be worthwhile to shift my home there?Pls guide and advise ASAP. Thanks.
    Hi Vipin,
A basement/part basement is not ideally suited for a house because of the fact that it is usually dingy, dark and damp. All theses factors could adversely affect the health of the inmates. Also, the sewage lines of the toilets in basements, will be below the main sewer line and so the sewage cannot flow out by gravity- it will have to be pumped out. But in your case, since the basement floor is just 7 steps down you may not have this problem- but check in any case as it is not worth shifting into the basement otherwise.

    Hi Krishna kumar,
It all depends on the plan. Ideally it should be in the NE.

Is it ok to have an office in the Lower Ground Floor ? I understand that it is practically by all means the uppper basement. Pls advise.
    Hi SA,
It is okay, but ensure that there is some kind of direct light and ventilation to the office space.

  • February 6, 2016 at 2:24 am

I am going to construct a basement, its a north facing plot,i m leaving setback for basement only from one direction i.e south direction(10′), rest all sides i m covering in basement. My plot size is 50’x 60′.firstly i have decided to leave setback of 10’from both sides i.e south and west, but now i have finalized with leaving setback from only one side.
Please tell me is it ok as per vastu rules.
    Hi Akul Mehta,
You first need to adhere to the bye-laws of your town/city. Generally they do not allow anyone to excavate a basement right upto the boundary as it can affect the neighbours walls etc. Even from a vastu point of view, it is better to leave setbacks of at least 3′, as you have control and access over the basement walls, the drainage at the ground level etc.

I need to know the following:-
    1. Which portion of the house is ideal for hanging pictures of family members (both – surviving and deceased)?
    2. Is it permissible to hang such pictures in the southern portion of the basement?
    3. Where in the basement can I hand a picture of Ganesha?
    Hi Ashish,
You can hang these pictures in the Southern portion of the basement. Hang the Gods picture somewhere in the NE corner on the East, North or West walls.

we are building a new house. we want to have basement. it is east facing house. where should the entrance to the garage be. we are planning it in south east direction. our basement will be occupying whole below in NE ,NW,SW E. Which direction to keep servaants quarters and godown im a bit confused.
    Hi Vandana,
You can have the entrance to the garage in the SE corner. Keep the servants quarters in the back of the house and the godown towards the south as it will be heated and prevent the growth of fungus etc.

Thinking to buy this already constructed house. Please help me.. The house is 30×40 duplex house. There is underground party hall/ exercise hall/ other co curricular activities hall which starts from north and ends at northeast.Hi.. North to north-east corner underground is done. And that is used as party hall. Will this be correct as per vastu? And ground floor is done with living room and a bedroom. In 1st floor, in south-east corner, kitchen comes. Will the kitchen in upstairs is correct according to vastu? Please guide me…
    Hi Ankitha,
The basement portion is okay, provided there is enough light and ventilation. But a kitchen on the upper floor is not ideal.

Dear sir, we are planning to buy a basement of a building of corner plot south facing . building is in corner of 3 roads intersection. Basement is used for commercial purpose. Pls let us know if it is beneficial for business.
    Hi Karan,
This site has an advantage as it has frontage on three roads. So will be ideal for commercial purposes.

I am planning to build a Multistore in a plot with west entrance and i have planned to build a basement parking entrance from west itself, as the plot is not very wide. Will it be ok.
please give some suggestions what can i do for parking the plot is 19X118 where i am building. It is basically for rental purpose but i can also use it.
    Hi Juhee,
You can have the basement parking entrance from the West since that is the road facing side. Since it is a long and narrow site, you could plan for parallel parking along one side.

  • July 28, 2016 at 5:13 am

My basement is in the center of home. Stair and gate is south side. Is right or wrong?
    Hi Rajesh Kumar,

    Hi Sir,
We are planning on buy a North facing house in USA.
It is duplex with Master bed in south, Kithcen in SE.Garage is in the NE corner of the house
    My concerns :
We have a 2/3 car garage in the NE corner of the house, the garage comes with a shutter, as per vastu is this OK?
From garage we have entrance into house. garage has windows.
Main entrance fall in Northwest. Is this OK
The house comes with a full basement, but they don’t dig below the garage, so the northeast area in the basement (i.e.right below the garage) will be closed or cut, as per vastu is this permissable?
Please advice and thanks in advance for all your help!
    Hi Sudha,
Looking for a vastu house in USA does not make sense, because the sun’s direction, prevailing wind directions, climate etc are all so different from those of India. But many of my readers look out for vastu compliant houses even abroad. Maybe it helps you to narrow down on a property!!! From your description, most things seem to be as per Indian vastu principles except for the NE corner which has no basement. I would advise you to go by your gut feeling on this one. If you and your family members are happy in this house go for it.

Really I appreciate your patience in giving response to all query. Hope you can clarify my doubts too.
I own a 30×40 plot in Bangalore. Its East facing. I am planning for Duplex house.. but leaving the ground floor (stilt) as full car parking space. So it will be stilt + w floors (Duplex).
Doubt is.. I read in many blog that there should not be stair case in North East direction. In my case.. I need stair case to from stilt floor to my first floor. Ideal location for my East facing plot is NE corner, which saves lot of space for me. Other stair case to second floor will be located in South internally. But I am worried about this stilt floor to first floor staircase location. Does it against Vastu compliant? I am really bother on this.. Please help
    Hi Ram,
The best designs are ones which are practical. If a staircase in the NE is the best option for reaching the first floor, then go ahead and place it there.

  • September 21, 2016 at 5:45 am

    Hi Sir,

Greetings! I liked your approach towards all the queries – given in a scientific way and not to scare people like most other websites i surfed. Putting forward my query – We are building a house on a 200sq yds, East Facing plot. As per the plan given by Architects, the servant quarter is on the South-West. That’s the only possible option given the design. Is it okay to have it there if we plan the room well. Also, they have left 6ft from the south-west corner (which will act as an entrance-area for the servant room) saying it is as per vastu, but given the already small room, I wish to include this 6ftx5ft area into the servant room as well to make it bigger. Looking forward to hear your thoughts on this.
    Hi Arpita,
Thanks for your appreciation. You can include that extra space into the servant’s room.

    Dear Sir,

We are building a 5 level split East house in USA, here are the questions I have, can you please provide if there are any doshas and remedies required.
    1. Since the house is 5 level split, entire South-side of the house is lower than the other-side of the house in bird view.
    2. Garage is on the south east side with garage entrance is East.
    3. The main entrance of the house is east side and north east corner went little inside comparing to South east side.
    4. There is a small sump pump pit, is designed properly to collect all the excess water surrounding the house. This is located in basement in Northwest corner.
    5. Bathroom is not built in basement at this moment, but builder provided the provision to build a bathroom in North east corner of the house in basement.

Thank you and waiting for the response.

    Good Morning
I find very logical and interesting while reading your explanation on vastu guidelines. I am pet practitioner recently taken one ground floor flat of residential cum commercial building. One vastu consultant informed that it is not good bcoz of basement position in Northern side and it will give loss of money even though good inflow is there .

Property has two at NW corner and 2nd one at NE corner…NE road width is less compared to NW road going to the property..Basement is at North side of the property almost 1/3rd distance from NW entry as compared to 2/3rd distance from NE entry..Basement is properly ventilated..While entering my flat from NE entry after few meters from gate ..starts ramp and right side of ramp my flat entry will be there( East entrance)…all rooms inside the flat are as per vastu only.. East side open area from building to compound wall is more compared to west side compound wall to building.
Please clarify if this property is good for running business.

Sir I have 20 Marla plot two side open facing west and south. I have my house in North East direction with gate on west side. I have basement in East south and west side. The basement is 3 ft. Above the ground and open space on basement. The house is built in 60*40 ft size an basement is built in 60*25 feet space on south side and 3 feet space between house and basement. Basement I am using for commercial purpose. Plot for house is on my name and plot for basement is on my wife name. Some body told me that this basement is not fit. What should I do.
