IDEAL VASTU COLOURS FOR A HOME | An Architect Explains

Colors play a very important role in our lives and have a definite bearing on our fate. People respond to the energy of colours around them, either positively or negatively. Preferably, colours in our built surroundings should be subtle and pleasant. They should not be very bright and stimulating. In Vastu Shastra, specific colours are prescribed for each room and in each direction. This is because each room has a specific function.

For example, a Pooja room is meant for prayer and meditation and hence should have a sober and subdued colour which will not be distracting but encourage quiet thinking.

Here I have explained under the following headings, the specific colours to be used in each room of the house and in the cardinal directions, in order to enhance the atmosphere of the specific room and make it useful in our daily life for bringing prosperity.

WHAT IS COLOUR AND ITS USES IN A HOUSE?

We are able to see colours because of the white sunlight that illuminates the Earth is the reason. The visible light energy of the sunlight contains all the possible coloured lights and each has a certain wave length. Colour is perceived by us because of the reflection of the particular colour component of the sunlight to our eyes where, the photo receptors in the retina of our eye (known as cones), translate this energy into colour.  Thus, when sunlight falls on an apple, it reflects the red light into our eyes while all the other colours of the sunlight are absorbed into the apple, giving us the perception of red colour.

Colours can be used in a variety of ways – on our walls, in clothes, in solarised water in coloured glasses. We can use curtains, carpets and furniture with colours of our liking.

WHAT ARE THE IDEAL VASTU COLOURS PRESCRIBED FOR THE ROOMS OF A HOUSE?

PRAYER ROOM/MEDITATION:

BEDROOM :

Pink is the ideal colour for the master bedroom.  The secondary colours can be light green and light blue as these are colours of hope and cultivation.  One must not use red in the bedroom, as it is too energizing though pink or red sheets and blankets are suitable for those who want to get married or for newly weds to ensure marital bliss. The Reasoning – Red can be overpowering and stressful for people who are anxious by nature especially when used in abundance in a bedroom. However, plain white sheets or white sheets with flowers or colourful designs are acceptable.

Yellow is suitable for the elderly. But avoid dark blue. The Reasoning – Yellow is a soothing colour while dark colours can be gloomy specifically for elderly people who spend a lot of time in the Bedroom.

STUDY ROOM/CHILDREN’S BEDROOM:

Use Green colour as it encourages concentration. Similarly, black is okay for furniture to encourage deep thoughts. Furthermore, parents can have blue coloured bedrooms for their children who tend to be aggressive. The Reasoning – Since young kids use children’s bedrooms for study, they should have a colour that generates calm and peace for a cool head.

LIVING ROOM:

In the living room, apply bright colours, shades, and patterns. The best colours are yellow, beige or tan, or green or blue. The Reasoning – As it is the place to entertain guests, it should be lively and conducive for pleasant conversations.

DINING ROOM:

Orange is the best colour for the dining room as it stimulates the appetite. Likewise, Peach colour can also be used, as it gives a cool affect and is a shade of orange. In addition, utilize secondary colours like pinks, greens, and blues. On the other hand, avoid black or white or a mixture of black and white as these colours are less conducive to enjoying eating. The Reasoning – The dining room where the family eats and entertains, should have colours that stimulate appetite and conversation.

KITCHEN:

For the kitchen, white is the best colour. It shows off the colours of food, as if it were a blank canvas upon which the cook creates a meal of red tomatoes, green peppers, yellow squash. Besides it is also the colour of purity and cleanliness. The Reasoning –  The kitchen tends to get dirty with all the grease and food. Hence it is better to have light colours that will not hide the dirt. Moreover, light shades and white brighten up the kitchen and enable us to see better while prepping and cooking.

BATH ROOM:

WHAT ARE THE VASTU COLOURS PRESCRIBED FOR ROOMS IN EACH CARDINAL  DIRECTION?

Vastu Shastra recommends the use of specific colours in each of the cardinal directions. This is because each direction is governed by a planet which is in turn represented by a specific colour. Scientifically this can be explained by the fact that, we perceive colour only because of sunlight and the intensity of sunlight is different in different directions. Hence it is suitable to have certain colours in each direction.

It is advisable to use the recommended colours for different directions to enhance good luck, health and wealth.

EAST: ruled by the Sun.

SOUTH-EAST: ruled by Venus.

The preferred colour is white which gives beauty, charm and luck. The Reasoning– It is suitable to have a kitchen in the South-East corner as it is lit up by the germicidal morning sun rays. It also helps to have the kitchen in white as the dirt and grime become visible and can be wiped away.

SOUTH: is ruled by Mars.

The ideal colour here is  red which provokes aggression. Hence this is preferred only for fire stations or police stations and not for houses.

SOUTH-WEST: is ruled by Rahu.

The suitable colour here is blue which gives courage. The Reasoning- It is ideal to have the master bedroom in the South-West corner. And a soothing colour like blue is perfect for a room of rest and repose.

WEST: is ruled by Saturn.

The colour preferred here is grey which gives satisfaction and maturity. The Reasoning- It is convenient to have the Toilets in the West. The colour grey is quite suited for toilets as it is a neutral, balanced and a very soothing and cooling colour. Grey, when paired with blue or white elements, can create a relaxing atmosphere. .

NORTH: is ruled by Mercury.

The colour suitable for this direction is green as this gives intelligence and wealth. The Reasoning- It is befitting to have the Living room in the North. Any colour will be suitable but green has an edge.

NORTH-EAST: is represented by Jupiter.

The ideal colour here is yellow as it stands for piety and purity. The Reasoning – The North-East corner is ideal for a pooja room or meditation room and since yellow stands for purity, it is the best colour for the Pooja room.
