Selecting the right site is very important since the Site represents a fixed form, that will radiate positive as well as negative energies depending on its location, orientation, shape, slope and soil quality. Therefore, these are the 5 important aspects to be considered when selecting a Site.
Normally an Architect is not involved at the time of buying a Site. But as an Architect myself, I suggest that it is better to involve an Architect early on, at the time of selecting a Site, as his inputs could be very valuable in deciding the right Site. Generally, the points an Architect will keep in mind while selecting a site, will by default be in accordance with Vastu Shastra, since Vastu principles are always based on common sense and logic. 

In case you already own a Site, you can still refer to the Vastu Guidelines for Site Selection, to help you evaluate your Site and if necessary, make corrections to make it more suitable.

In the Selection of a Site, the following five Vastu Guidelines  for selecting the right site should be looked into since these guidelines are based on Scientific reasoning and common sense.


Given a chance to select among North, South, East or West facing houses, most people will tend to choose the North or East facing ones because they are considered the most auspicious. However, not every North or East facing house is ideal. In fact, the placement of the entrance dictates whether a house is auspicious according to Vastu Shastra and has been explained here:

    my DOB is 09/04/1970 what should be the direction of the plot and main door of the house.

    According to me, DOB has nothing to do with the ideal direction of a plot. After all each family member has a different DOB. A west facing plot is as good as any other direction.

    I had an open land of 210sft, the 3 boundaries West, South and North are Staright and East is Corss towards North. Hence Noth is 6 feet more that south. Can I construct, Cross boudary wall in the East

    I have a plot facing north. east side is deep strom water drain. Plot front which is 47 meters wide (north side)x 358 meters long but south wall is only 7 meters. The plot ground is sloping down towards south by 12-14 meters.Is there any solution to this site to convert this plot or residential area into vastu friendly.

    Yours is not an ‘ideal’ site according to vastu, but because of its size, the defects are less pronounced. You should build your house more in the front in the North as it is higher here. Since there is a storm water drain on the East side, you can open out the SE corner of your site to allow all the run-off water in the site to drain out.

    we are about to purchase a individual house..with north facing entrance..but the plot is east facing and has small diagnolly cut place in north east corner..
    after we pay the dowmnpayment they will start constructing the house…
    is it ok to purchase this house…
    wt to be done for the defect in the northeast corner…
    where should the staircase be inside the house..since its a duplex house

    If the cut in the NE corner is small, you can ignore it. ideally the staircase should be somewhere centrally so that access to the rooms is easy.

    Hello, I am planning to buy a plot with below dimensions. Please let me know if it is vaastu compliant
    It is a corner plot with 30 feet road on the east and 23 feet road on the south.
    East to West: On the northern side 39 feet. On the southern side 42 feet.
    North to South: On the eastern side 59 feet. On the western side 63 feet.

    On the Eastern side, it is a Gou-mukh plot with a narrow mouth and on the Southern side, it is a simha mukh, with a wider mouth. So if you are planning to build a house, then build it with the entrance from the Eastern side But if you are planning a commercial space, then have the entrance/ frontage on the Southern side.

    I am planning to buy a plot and i have two options of plot.
    1. Plot facing north, approx 6feet below road level,west side ( outside plot ) is a small lake ( talab ) the stream of which flows towards northeast. The talab is used by villagers to take bath.

    2. Plot facing south, west side is a small graveyard.
    Please suggest me the pros and cons and its remedies. Should i go ahead or leave these plots.

    From your description, the North facing is better as the nearby stream and lake are tempting. But the plot is lower than the road level by quite a difference. Moreover, there is the question of privacy if the villagers are regulars. It is difficult to assess any plot unless one is present there. So the best judge is you and your family. Make a decision based on your gut instinct.

    I have two plots each measure 40’x90′ / 40’x90′ and infront of the plot a road from north thrust on as a T junction ( fall on in between the two plot at equal length), but both side two roads goes to west and east direction. I am going to build home. Please advise. Also let me that is it right decision to grow Ashoka tree in south west compound wall or house area?

    Are you planning to build the house in the two plots or in only one? In any case, have a high compound wall at the junction where the spearing road hits the sites. It is okay to have an Ashoka tree in the SW.

    Dear Sir, we have a site in T Junction. Our side is a north east corner site.The road on the north side of our site hits the house opposite to our site on his south-west. Is it ok to construct in my corner plot which is in T Junction.

    A NE corner site is the best. So do not bother about the T Junction.

    There is two dead end plot facing north and another opposite plot facing south
    Road from East hits the two plot in v direction North East and southeast side of the North and south plot respectively.
    Shall i buy the North Facing plot which was hit by the road in Northeast direction or south facing plot which was hit by the road in South East direction.
    Kindly suggest whether i go ahead and buy the plot.

    I am planning to purchase west facing site at coimbatore city limits.The site is not perfect rectangular South to North at both sides are 40 Feet.East to west on the northern side is 68.5 feet whereas the same at southern side is 68 ft. If to say,southern side is longer by 2.5 feet than the northern side, at south east corner. Is ok according to manai adi Sasthra. If not what to do .Is there any remedy as per sasthra.Pl guide me

    Hi – quick question, we found a house that we like but the only downside is that the land slopes towards the west. The house entrance is facing north east. There is also a drain in the West because of the slope. Are there any vastu remedies to fix this?

    Someone suggested planting y’all trees in the southwest and west side and make it as heavy as possible. Also put pyramids and copper wiring around the house. Please advise. Thank you!

    We are planning to buy a WEST facing plot (40×60) with 30 feet wide road coming from both NORTH and SOUTH and there is one more road hitting to middle and NORTH/WEST of the plot(WEST) i.e., like a T-Junction.
    Is this a good choice to move fwd, Could you pls suggest.

    Recently i purchased a plot, having road in the west, the wset side pathway is 58X39ft, then comes the main plot which is 200ft east -west and 102 ft north south. now i want to place a 1500sqft house in this plot please advice me where to place the house. the main entrance has to be in the west.
    should i place the house main door facing the north keeping a lot of space towards East and North.

    Hi there!
    Planning to buy a land in the hills of North Bengal, about 1.2 acres.
    The plot is south facing with the north slope higher than the south. The access road runs from South goes to the curved east and then north onwards…There is a water drain running all along the western part.
    Do you think this will be suitable for my personal residence along with a commercial homestay and a ceramic pottery studio?
    Your suggestions would be much appreciated.

    I purchased a site with north facing and East to the west is 30 ft and north to south in east side 43.3 and west side 44.3ft, the total is 1312.5 sq ft. How much aya will get? Westside 2ft road potu also coming.

    We are planning to buy 4 units 2 BHK on 17 th ( topmost) floor of appartment & convert them in single unit of 4BHK ….it has a pillar in centre..also east & west directions are closed & centre part of all four sides are cut in lift & ducts, staircase….is it preferable ?

    From what you have described, this is not ideal as the core services (lift staircase) are in the centre within the proposed apartment. The sound of the elevator, the risk of fire are real threats. Also the east and west being cut off prevents sunlight from inundating the house. Better to look for some other option.
