SCIENTIFIC VASTU FOR WEST FACING HOUSE | An Architect Explains
For people who follow Vastu Shastra rules, the direction of the main door of the house is an important consideration. Generally, West facing houses are the third choice; first and second choices being North Facing and East Facing houses respectively. The reason that a West facing home has become the third choice for many people is the ‘wrong’ belief that West facing houses are bad as per ‘Vastu Shastra“. However, this is not true and a West facing home can be as auspicious as a North or East Facing one, provided one follows certain Vastu rules.
In this post, I have described the Vastu guidelines for the placement of rooms, the entrance, etc., in a West facing property. But being an Architect, I cannot just list these guidelines unless I feel that there is a scientific basis to them. So, I have explained the Vastu Guidelines that I feel make sense, under the following headings:
What is a West facing house?
What does Vastu Shastra actually say about West facing houses?
What are the Vastu Guidelines for the location of the main door in West facing houses?
What should one avoid in West facing houses?
What rules should one follow in West facing houses?
WHAT IS A WEST FACING HOUSE?
Many people find it difficult to identify the orientation of the house/site. The House/Site orientation can be recognised by one simple action. Stand inside the house or the Site and face out of the main door or gate, as the case may be. The direction you face is said to be the House/Site orientation. So, if you face West, then it is a West facing house.
WHAT DOES VASTU SHASTRA SAY ABOUT WEST FACING HOUSES?
You might have heard from the so-called ‘Vastu specialists’ that living in a South or a West facing house will invite trouble in life etc. and that only East or North facing properties are good. This is a false myth propagated to make you spend money for solutions and corrections as suggested by the ‘specialists’. The truth is that in an East or North facing property, it just becomes easier to orient each and every room in the ideal locations recommended by Vastu Shastra. But that does not mean that Vastu Shastra guidelines cannot be followed in a South or West facing site. It just needs some tweaking.
In reality, as per Vastu Shastra, all the directions are equally good and the auspiciousness of a home doesn’t depends upon the direction. The most important factor is the correct placement (location) of the main door/entrance door. For each and every direction – be it North, East, South or West –Vastu Shastra lays down specific rules for locating the main entrance door of the house. You must locate the entrance at only “allowed” places and never in the “prohibited” zones.
Now, since we’re dealing with West facing houses, let’s have a look at the Vastu guidelines for them.
WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES FOR THE LOCATION OF THE MAIN DOOR IN WEST FACING HOUSES?
To figure out where to place the main door in West facing houses, imagine and divide the West length of the house from the North-West (NW) corner to the South-West (SW) corner into 9 equal parts; (each part is called as pada or step in Vastu Shastra). The NW pada is the 1st pada and the SW pada is 9th. This has been indicated in the image below. You can see that the padas 1 and 2 are yellow in color; 3, 4, 5 and 6 are green and padas 7, 8 and 9 are red in colour.
Here’s a summary of the Vastu guidelines for location of the main door in West facing houses:
- According to Vastu Shastra, for a West facing house, any of the green coloured four padas i.e. the 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th are best suited for locating the main door of the home.
- The entrance of a West facing house can also be located in padas 1 and 2, the yellow coloured ones (only if the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th padas) cannot be used. This position is neither good nor bad.
- Padas 7, 8 and 9, the red ones, should be avoided i.e. you should not locate the entrance of your home in the South West part.
ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA, WHAT SHOULD ONE AVOID IN WEST FACING HOUSES?
- Avoid placing the entrance in the 7th, 8th and 9th padas on the West side, ie avoid the SW corner of the house.
- Avoid locating a bore-well or water sump in the SW part of the site.
- Never buy a plot or flat having extension in the South or SW.
- Avoid having a Kitchen in SW part of the house.
ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA, WHAT TIPS SHOULD ONE FOLLOW IN WEST FACING HOUSES?
- Locate the entrance in the 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th padas in the West side.
- You can also use 1st and 2nd padas if you want.
- The walls in South and West must be thicker and higher than those in the East and North.
- Place the Kitchen in SE or NW of the house; But avoid SW.
- Master bedroom in SW is the best; if the house has multiple floors then locate the master bedroom at the highest floor.
- Kid’s room can be in South, West or North-West.
- A guest bedroom can be placed in North-West.
So now a lot of you may feel reassured that it is okay if you have a West facing main door. If you believe in Vastu Shastra, it makes sense to make some tweaks as suggested in this post to help you feel totally reassured.

sir,we are constructing west face commercial building with size of width&length 40 ft*72 ft.
We have located “lift at Niruthi corner,staircase opposite to lift”.(9ft width,20 ft length).
We also planned to construct a house on the 4th floor.
My doubt is where to keep “Master bedroom” in this plot?
What is your opinion on a cul-d-sac House lot with the main door predominantly facing west. The lot is very wide in the back with a Rocky water creek flowing north to East and trees on the back side. Master bedroom on the north, guest bedrooms on the southeast and west. Kitchen in the middle. Lot of empty land on north and east sides.

Kitchen- south East
Dining in west /southwest
Upstairs master in north east- bed to be facing south
Kids bedrooms upstairs south east and south west.
Any thoughts or things we should be reconsidering? I see a lot of advice about the master bedroom being in other directions for west facing homes, but wasn’t sure what the rule is when we have master upstairs.

The main door determines the facing of the house. The main gate decides the orientation of the site. So if you want to know which direction your house faces, then enter the house and then turn and face outwards. The direction you face is the direction of the house.

Since i am of a scientific mind and do not look at Vastu as a superstition, I tend to ignore if a room is not in the right position. However I understand that people who look at Vastu superstitiously do not want to take chances. So for those people, I tell them to follow the remedies that are suggested on the net. I am assuming that you will have to put the swatik on the left, OM on the top and Trishul on the right of the door. But you could confirm with some expert.

My daughter booked a rented house in a apartment which consist 3 floor facing west side. She booked on 1st. Floor. In first floor west facing two apartment no 101 and 102. In between there is wall. Both the main doors either side of the wall. 101is north side 102 is south side.

As per your tips I make main gate NW 2 to 6 pada & Kitchen SE , Drawing room S W ,one bed room N (middle) and second bed room NE with attached bathroom. So Now Pl suggest water should be Keeping in (SW – front) or NW (back). If keep in front what will do for positive energy. Pl suggest over all view. or any changes.

kitchen in SW corner is the least favoured according to Vastu. Master bedroom in the SE is also not ideal. So if you are a believer of Vastu you might want to consider some simple remedial measures that you can research on the net.

According to me, most of the vastu of this house is okay except for the kitchen which is in the SW corner. This is the least favoured according to Vastu. So you might want to take some Vastu experts advice and all your family members ‘feeling’ about this house. If you decide to take it, place the cooking platform on the South East side and face, cooking east.

You have to ensure that “only your main entrance door” is in the said padas. Extension in Vastu generally refers to extension in the plot. According to me, it does not refer to the building extension. However, there are some vastu experts who interpret this differently and consider building extensions just like plot extensions. So it depends on whom you want to follow.

As you heard, Well in the SW corner is the least favoured according to Vastu. However, you could construct a sump in the NE corner and pump the water from the well into the sump where it can be stored. This water can then be pumped to the overhead tank for use. If you are not using the well water fill it, compact it and close it off.

We have done bore well in NE corner but not even 1/2 inch water source is there, as we were constructing 3 floors, we have shown to geologist and he said one more good source of water point is there in SW, what should we do?? as said above even you mentioned its not good to have.Ours is a west facing site only. Why did you dig a borewell in the NE if there was no good source. To ensure that you get water, it makes sense to dig a well where the geologist recommends. At such times you cannot blindly go by vastu recommendations.
