As an Architect practising in Bangalore, India, I have often been instructed by my clients to apply Vastu Shastra rules to the design of their houses. Since we are not taught Vastu Shastra in our Bachelor of Architecture course, I decided to learn the subject by myself, from several insightful books. Surprisingly, I found it an easy subject to learn, since Vastu Shastra guidelines are wholly based on scientific principles and very similar to the basic design rules that we are taught in Architecture school…….

Vastu Shastra, which literally translated means ‘the Science of Buildings’ takes into account the factors influencing a Site such as topography, roads, surrounding structures, the Sun’s effects, Earth’s magnetic field, Earth’s energy fields, the cardinal directions and Nature’s elements. Vastu shastra lays down guidelines and tips for the ‘design of buildings’, so that Man can benefit from the useful and positive effects of these factors and is protected from the harmful and negative effects.
