SCIENTIFIC VASTU FOR WEST FACING HOUSE | An Architect Explains

For people who follow Vastu Shastra rules, the direction of the main door of the house is an important consideration. Generally, West facing houses are the third choice; first and second choices being North Facing and East Facing houses respectively. The reason that a West facing home has become the third choice for many people is the ‘wrong’ belief that West facing houses are bad as per ‘Vastu Shastra“. However, this is not true and a West facing home can be as auspicious as a North or East Facing one, provided one follows certain Vastu rules.

West facing house

In this post, I have described the Vastu guidelines for the placement of rooms, the entrance, etc., in a West facing property. But being an Architect, I cannot just list these guidelines unless I feel that there is a scientific basis to them. So, I have explained the Vastu Guidelines that I feel make sense, under the following headings:

What is a West facing house?
What does Vastu Shastra actually say about West facing houses?
What are the Vastu Guidelines for the location of the main door in West facing houses?
What should one avoid in West facing houses?
What rules should one follow in West facing houses?

WHAT IS A WEST FACING HOUSE?

Many people find it difficult to identify the orientation of the house/site. The House/Site orientation can be recognised by one simple action. Stand inside the house or the Site and face out of the main door or gate, as the case may be. The direction you face is said to be the House/Site orientation. So, if you face West, then it is a West facing house.

WHAT DOES VASTU SHASTRA SAY ABOUT WEST FACING HOUSES?

You might have heard from the so-called ‘Vastu specialists’ that living in a South  or a West facing house will invite trouble in life etc. and that only East or North facing properties are good. This is a false myth propagated to make you spend money for solutions and corrections as suggested by the ‘specialists’. The truth is that in an East or North  facing property, it just becomes easier to orient each and every room in the ideal locations recommended by Vastu Shastra. But that does not mean that Vastu Shastra guidelines cannot be followed in a South or West facing site. It just needs some tweaking.

In reality, as per Vastu Shastra, all the directions are equally good and the auspiciousness of a home doesn’t depends upon the direction. The most important factor is the correct placement (location) of the main door/entrance door. For each and every direction – be it North, East, South or West –Vastu Shastra lays down specific rules for locating the main entrance door of the house. You must locate the entrance at only “allowed” places and never in the “prohibited” zones.

Now, since we’re dealing with West facing houses, let’s have a look at the Vastu guidelines for them.

WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES FOR THE LOCATION OF THE MAIN DOOR IN WEST FACING HOUSES?

To figure out where to place the main door in West facing houses, imagine and divide the West length of the house from the North-West (NW) corner to the South-West (SW) corner into 9 equal parts; (each part is called as pada or step in Vastu Shastra). The NW pada is the 1st pada and the SW pada is 9th. This has been indicated in the image below. You can see that the padas 1 and 2 are yellow in color; 3, 4, 5 and 6 are green and padas 7, 8 and 9 are red in colour.

West-Facing-House-VastuHere’s a summary of the Vastu guidelines for location of the main door in West facing houses:

  • According to Vastu Shastra, for a West facing house, any of the green coloured four padas i.e. the 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th are best suited for locating the main door of the home.
  • The entrance of a West facing house can also be located in padas 1 and 2, the yellow coloured ones (only if the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th padas) cannot be used. This position is neither good nor bad.
  • Padas 7, 8 and 9, the red ones, should be avoided i.e. you should not locate the entrance of your home in the South West part.

ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA, WHAT SHOULD ONE AVOID IN WEST FACING HOUSES?
  • Avoid placing the entrance in the 7th, 8th and 9th padas on the West side, ie avoid the SW corner of the house.
  • Avoid locating a bore-well or water sump in the SW part of the site.
  • Never buy a plot or flat having extension in the South or SW.
  • Avoid having a Kitchen in SW part of the house.

ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA, WHAT TIPS SHOULD ONE FOLLOW IN WEST FACING HOUSES?
  • Locate the entrance in the 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th padas in the West side.
  • You can also use 1st and 2nd padas if you want.
  • The walls in South and West must be thicker and higher than those in the East and North.
  • Place the Kitchen in SE or NW of the house; But avoid SW.
  • Master bedroom in SW is the best; if the house has multiple floors then locate the master bedroom at the highest floor.
  • Kid’s room can be in South, West or North-West.
  • A guest bedroom can be placed in North-West.

So now a lot of you may feel reassured that it is okay if you have a West facing main door. If you believe in Vastu Shastra, it makes sense to make some tweaks as suggested in this post to help you feel totally reassured.

Visit my blog on House Construction In India  and carry out an evaluation exercise to judge whether the Orientation of a Site is as per Vaastu Shastra principles. Accordingly, you can decide if you want to buy the Site. In case you already possess a Site, then you can decide whether you want to make some corrections to the Site, so that it is suitable as per Vaastu.

Though I normally explain the Vastu Principles scientifically, in this post I chose to only list the Vastu guidelines because I have realised that most of my readers are not keen to know the science behind the guidelines- they only want guidance for the correct location of the main entrance door and rooms. But if you are interested, you could go to my scientifically explained posts:

    Sir ,
Thank you for the detailed explanation about vastu basics.
I have identified a 2 BHK flat in high rise apartment (8th floor). Ground and First floor are for shared amenities like Indoor games, Conference hall etc., in the block.

    West facing flat
    Entrance at pada 1,2
SW – Master Bedroom with common toilet adjacent to the MBR (located in pada 3&4)
    SE – Kitchen
NE – Bedroom with attached toilet (NE corner – Bedroom and Toilet is in East)
Common wall at North side and remaining three sides are open (East, South and West) and windows are available in all the three directions

Is this plan ok and can we go for this plan?
Also is it ok to have a floor above the floors for amenities?
Also, Kindly give me your views and remedies about North -East Bedroom.

    Regards
    SV

    Hi,

I read the article but not sure if I have a west facing or East facing apartment. When I’m entering the apartment I’m looking in the west direction and can see the setting sun through the windows. Does this mean I have a East facing house? According to the article I should stand inside the apartment and look outside the main door but I will be facing the east direction then.

Also, in the south west we have the master bedroom and adjoining it is the kitchen which I think will be south south west. Second bedroom is South East where I sleep and I’m not married yet. Third bedroom is in the south south east direction adjoining the south east room. Fourth bedroom is in the north west. It’s for the guests. In the north east we have a terrace and some plants. Money plant is kept in the south east corner of the terrace.

Mom sleeps in the living room as she doesn’t like the south west room and the face that my dad snores with high AC on.

Any suggestions or advice for good vastu for this apartment?
