CoA | PROCEDURE FOR REGISTRATION

The Council of Architecture (CoA) states that, “Any person desirous of practising as an ‘Architect’ in India is required to be registered in the Register, with the Council of Architecture (CoA). He shall be entitled on payment of the prescribed fees to have his name entered in the register, if he resides or carries on the profession of Architect in India and holds a recognised qualification (Indian and Foreign) listed in the CoA  Schedule, or does not hold such a qualification but, being a citizen of India, has been engaged in practice as an architect for a period of not less than five years prior to 27.04.1974 or possesses such other qualifications as may be prescribed by rules .”

REGISTER

Though the procedure for registration with the CoA has been explained in detail in the CoA website, it is confusing. So I get many queries regarding the procedure. As an Architect, I have described the details of the procedure for registering with the Council of Architecture in India here under the following headings:

What is the Register of architects?
What is the procedure for getting registered with the CoA?
What are the documents to be submitted along with the application for registration?
Can you apply for registration if you have not received your architectural certificate?
What is the procedure if a mark sheet is missing?
What is the procedure to apply for change in name?
How does one apply for change of name after marriage?
What should be done if the name on the architectural certificate does not match with the name on the basis of which the registration is sought?
Can an Architect have an additional qualification entered in the Register of Architects?
Is the one time payment option available while registering with the CoA?
When is the certificate of registration issued?
When is the Register printed?
What happens if the CoA rejects your application for registration?
Does the registration with the CoA have to be renewed?

WHAT IS THE REGISTER OF ARCHITECTS?

The Central Government provides a Register of Architects in India. The Council of Architecture prepares and maintains the Register in accordance with the provisions of the Architect’s Act. The Register includes the following particulars:

    Hi,

I completed my B.Arch (from a university in Punjab) in 2010 and got my registration no. in 2013. I came abroad after getting married and also due to some very personal reasons, could not do the renewal. Now I am coming back to India and want to continue there.
Kindly tell me how should I proceed for renewal, also tell me whether I can register for life time particularly in this case?!
    Thanks and regards
    Hi Shreya,
You can apply for renewal. But you will have to pay a fine because you are late in renewing. You can read about it in my post on CoA | Procedure for Renewal. If you have been registered for a minimum of 2 years, then you are elligible for one-time payment option.

    Hi Admin,
I am a student of Mumbai and i had to re-appear my final year Term 1 exam for 1 of the subjects as i had not cleared it in the first attempt. I wish yo apply for the Architect’s Registration in COA. I am ready with all the relevant documents except for the mark-sheet of the first failed attempt in final year exams. Is it ok if i send the rest of the mark-sheets of all the terms of 5 years which i have cleared?
    Hi Dipti,
You need to send copies of all the semesters’ marks cards which indicate that you have cleared all of them. But you do not need to send the marksheet of the failed attempt.

This information is very useful. Thank you.
I would like to know if only an architectural qualifications i.e., B.Arch or M.Arch are required to apply for this and to practice architecture or can any degree holder apply for this. For instance, I am Mechanical Engineer and a Designer with high knowledge in Structural Engineering and Architecture. I have been designing buildings and structures for non commercial or practical usage for two years now with help of multiple softwares complying and considering all aspects of Structural Engineering and Architectural.
I am a resident Indian. With an Indian degree. I’m determined to practice architecture at professional level. Can I apply for this ? If so, is the procedure different than you mentioned? Do tell me how I can apply.
    Looking forward for your reply.
    Regards,
    Praveen Kumar
    Hi Praveen,
Without the requisite degree or education, you will not be able to register with the Council of Architecture.

The concerned is required to click at “Change Name” given at architect button and an attested copy of Gazette Notification towards change of name from the respective State/Central Government shall be accepted. Sir, is it possible that we can go personally to their office to submit and get the verification of the original certificates done on the spot to avoid loss of time and also chances of the original certificates getting lost in transit?
    Hi Prashant,
It is possible but I am not sure if they will verify all the documents then and there and return the originals immediately. If you find out more, please let me know, so that my readers can benefit from it.

how much percentage is compulsory from B.Arch. for getting the COA license
    Hi Lovely,
The percentage does not matter. You must have passed B.Arch and been awarded the B.Arch degree certificate by your university.

    Hello,
I finished my B.Arch (from Shivaji University,Kolhapur, India) in the month of May in 2015 i.e. last year. I have not yet registered in COA but will be doing it soon. I recently heard that if one registers in COA after one or more years of completion of the degree (B.Arch), he/she is supposed to write an exam to get themselves registered and nothing of that sort is required if one registers within one year of completion of the course. I am not sure of the authenticity of this information. So, I would like to know if this is the case as in a couple of months, it would be one year since I completed the course.
    Hi Surabhi,
This rumour has been around for some time but there is no mention of it in the CoA website. IT was proposed at one time just to ensure that only the students that have basic architectural knowledge can be allowed to be registered, because the standard of education in many colleges is below par. But to my knowledge, it has not been implemented.

    Dear Sir,

I belong to 2006-2011 batch but i completed my backlog papers only in 2014 and have acquired My B.arch degree.I Do not know my enrollment number that is to be filled in the form.As my college has turned into a deemed university, they do not have old records. Kindly let me know how to get to know my enrollment number.I have other docs such as original degree, consolidated mark sheet, birth certificate, 10+2 mark sheet etc. But, As the application form requires the enrollment number, im stuck! please guide me on how to proceed as i would like to register soon.
    Hi Aquin Noel,
You have been careless!! Is the enrollment number not mentioned in any of the other documents that you possess? Then you must send a similar letter to the coa and ask them what you should do. Sometimes they do not process the registration if the form is incomplete, so it is better to get a reply from them before you send the originals for registration.
PS: There is a page on the CoA website regarding enrollment numbers. You could try entering your name and institute name and see if you can access your enrollment number.

    Hello Sir..
I have completed my 5year degree course in the year 2013 and haven’t registered under COA yet. There are been confusions created by many saying that if not registered before Dec 31st 2015 we will have to take up an exam to qualify for registration.
Can you please clarify on the same.
    Thanking you in advance.
    Hi Chinappa,
There was a proposal 2-3 years ago to introduce a professional exam for registration because the standards and quality at all institutions are never uniform and a professional exam is the only way to ensure that the best students with appropriate knowledge join the profession. But to the best of my knowledge, it has not beeen implemented so far. It is not mentioned anywhere in the CoA website. So I think it is not applicable.

    Hello sir,
I started my B.Arch course in july 2008 and cleared my 3rd year till july 2013 (within 5yrs). Now, i want to know that after 3rd year, in how many years one has to complete architecture specially to be eligible for COA license?
My another question is, In last sem training, can I do office training under any known architect or trainer architect should fall in some specific criteria so that i can do training with him. If there are some criteria to choose an architect for an office training, then please guide me with those.
    Hi Aryan,
There is no specific qualification or criteria that an architect must possess for your training. Any registered architect with a firm can take up trainees. But it is in your interest that you work with a well established/experienced architect so that you can learn the practical applications of whatever you have learned theoretically in college.
It is correct that one has to clear the first 3 years within 5 years, but it is not clear as to the time period for completing the remaining 2 years- it is not specified in the CoA regulations.

    Hi David Inbaraj,
I have been getting many queries regarding an “exam for registration”. But I have never come across it in the CoA website. You can also go through it in detail. I do not know if there is such a condition for colleges that are not recognised. In case you have some more details please let me know as it will be useful for my readers.

    Hello,
I completed B. Arch in 2013 and was working from Aug 2013- June 2015, but presently I’m not practicing independently nor employed. Therefore, should I mention date of commencement of profession in column 8 and what should be mentioned in column 6 & 9?
    Hi Asha,
Why are you seeking registration now, when you are not practicing? If you are planning to take up projects independently, then fill in your residential address as your professional one and mention that you are working independently.

I m currently doing internships.I have little doubt, in our university you don’t need to clear all the subject for go to 4th year that is internship year(whole year of internship) and we can give all the subjects of third year in 4th year while doing internship means basically you need clear all the subjects of 3rd when you’re going to 5th.I failed in 5 subjects in 3rd year but still I can attempt all of them in 4th year if I pass in all I can go to 5th year.that’s how our university works.is that OK for our future registration in coa???
    Hi Vivek,
If that is acceptable in your college/university, then it should be fine. It doesn’t matter if you have failed in any of the years- but at the time of applying for registration, you should have cleared all the years and have a degree certificate with you. Anyhow, is there anything you can do about the fact that you failed??? Just make sure you use the internship year to clear all the pending subjects.

    Respected Sir,
I just wanted to know about the new rule passed by COA.
Is this true that will have to give exam to get register??Also wanted to know that m not having my all the mark-sheets of the semesters but have a proof of my degree in form of provisional as marksheets are not given by the institute. So can i register??
    Thank-you
    Mehak
    Hi Mehak,
First of all there is no such rule that you have to give an exam to register. But you need to provide all the semesters’ mark sheets in order to get the registration with the COA.

After getting degree from Mumbai University for 5 years B.Arch, is it necessary to do internship of 120/90 days to register with COA?
    Hi SS Negi,
There is no such condition for getting the registration, because you would have already done internship at some point during the 5 year course. All you have to do is, submit the relevant marks sheets, degree certificates etc, in original and with attested copies.

    hi sir,
I completed my B.arch 5 months ago,on 05.11.15 COA published the enrollment number in their official page. In that my +2 marks are mentioned wrongly.
I’m planning to register in Coa ,for that i need to send my +2 certificate and if i send so…the certificate which will send by me will have marks differ from the one they mentioned in the enrollment page.
ie, in page they displayed as 783 but my mark is 1103 in my certificate.
    wt shld i do now..?
vl it be a prob if i send my application with my +2 certificate?
    Hi Shiva,
Submit all the necessary documents including an attested copy of the +2 marks card. Explain to them the confusion and hopefully it should be sorted out.

Hi admin, i read the comment of pradnya of march 2 – 2015 asking for renewal procedure and your reply to it. however you have replied with fresh registration procedure and annual fee information. kindly let me know, if i have paid a one time fee 10 years back in 2005, what documents need to send again for renewal/further 10 years endorsement on the certificate and how soon should i send if my registration ends this december?
    Hi Yash
The rules have changed now. You need to fill up the renewal form and send it along with an attested copy of the Final B.Arch.Degree / G.D. Arch. Certificate. You do not have to send any more fees since you have already made a one-time payment. It is always better to apply at least 2 months before december of the year that your registration lapses.

    Hi Amrita,
I have not heard about such an option. But you could communicate with CoA either by mail or call them to verify your number.

    HI Abha,
If you cleared all the year exams and have legitimate marks cards for the same, then you can send attested xerox copies of them to the CoA along with the degree certificate (if you have been awarded one) and an application for registration and see what they say.

    Hello Sir/Mam ,
I have came across your website recently and find it very use full
and to the point. I had enrolled into architecture in 2006 but due to some conditions i wasn’t able to complete the degree and had to drop out after 2nd year. I have been working with an architect for past 3yrs. I would like to know if there is any way or chance of getting my architectural degree by joining back the college now and completing the remaining years, since as per the rules i know the first 3 years must be completed in 5 years duration.
I would also appreciate if you could let me know about any other alternative way to get my degree done by any equivalent short term diploma/degree course from any Indian or foreign university that you have knowledge off. I have heard of some examination/course after 5 years of professional practice under the licensed architect that provides you with architectural degree from C.O.A, i am not sure of its authenticity, i would be very thankful to you if you could help me in knowing if their is any such system available to get an architectural degree.
Well maybe i have asked too much, But i hope you understand my concern, and thanks again since the work done by your articles have already been very much useful. Best of luck for your work ahead.
    Hi Rahil,
Thank you for your appreciation. I wish I could help you with your doubts. But yours is a unique case and I am not sure if you can complete the remaining three years of your degree.
But recently the “Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) has started the enrollment to their scheme of Examinations 2014, from academic session 2014-2015 for eligible candidates to qualify for AIIA. AIIA (By Examination) has been notified by the Central Govt. at par with the Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture of the recognised Indian University for the purpose of employment to posts and services under the Central Government in the appropriate field and eligible for registration with the Council of Architecture(COA).”

    HI Pradnya,
Thank you for pointing out the changes made by the COA. Accordingly, i have updated my post. All the information regarding the procedure for renewal has been explained in my post. But for your benefit, i will describe it here:
A renewal fee of Rs 600/- for the Current year, should be paid annually to the Council before the first day of April, of the year to which it relates. An application for renewal along with the prescribed fee and the necessary documents should be submitted personally at the office of the Council or sent by post to “The Registrar, Council of Architecture, India Habitat Centre, Core 6-AFirst floor, Lodhi Road, New Delhi – 110 003.”The documents to be submitted for renewal of Registration include:

    1. A cash/demand draft in favour of the ‘Council of Architecture’ payable at New Delhi towards renewal. A one time payment of Rs 6000/- is also accepted provided you have been registered with the COA, already for a minimum period of 2 years.
    2. The Certificate of registration in original. No provisional certificate will be accepted for the one time option.
3.The recognised architectural qualification certificate in original, for verification and return by Registered Post, along with a copy of the same duly attested by either a Gazetted Officer or Notary Public/Oath Commissioner. The recognised architectural qualifications (Indian and Foreign) are listed in the COA SCHEDULE.
    4. Any additional recognized architectural qualification certificates in original, for verification and return by Registered Post, along with a copy of the same duly attested by either a Gazetted Officer or Notary Public/Oath Commissioner.

    Hello,
I finished my B.Arch (from an university in Tamil Nadu, India) in the month of May in 2014 i.e.
    Thank you in advance.
    Hi Krithika,
I have not heard of any such thing. It is not there on the COA website either. So I don’t think you should be concerned. Go ahead and send the application for registration as explained in my post.

    Hi Vanishree,
Since you have done diploma after the 10th, you can submit the diploma marks cards. This has been quoted in the COA guidelines as “10+3 Diploma (any stream) recognised by Central/ State Governments with 50% aggregate marks” is acceptable instead of 10 + 2. Except for the original degree certificate, you can submit the attested copies of the other documents. But the original degree certificate will be returned to you by the self addressed envelope that you send along with your application.

    Hi Manya,
The enrollment number to be filled in the form, is the one issued by the COA and communicated to the institutions w.e.f 2008. So it should be of 6 digits. Probably you are looking at an earlier number since you joined in 2005. Just check with your college and your classmates.

    Hi Sang,
I am not sure if you can be registered with the COA, (though you have received a valid B.Arch degree form India) because you are not a citizen of India. I believe the condition for registration is that, one has to be a citizen of India. There could be some exceptions, so it is better to contact the COA directly.

Hi, It took me six years to complete the course and get degree from my university. But when i went to get the registration no. from the council they demanded the separate mark sheets for each semester to check if i have cleared all the exams of my first three years within five years or not. And unfortunately neither I nor the collage or university have all the individual marksheets of each semester (i have already had a fight with my university and collage, as they had lost some of my marksheet which they cant provide it now). I have completed my graduation in 2010 but still trying to get the registration no. please advise if is there any way to get it done as i am seriously tired of running here and there?
Many of my friends (who have passed Architecture in 6-7 years) have got the registration no. without asking for seperate marksheets.
    Thanks in advance.
    Hi Shantanu Sinha,
I understand your frustration. But unfortunately the COA is very strict about clearing all the semesters. So, as a standard procedure, they need attested copies of all the marksheets or if your university provides it, a ‘consolidated marksheet’ of all the semesters. I am sure your university will be able to provide you one even though they lost the individual marksheets. But if that is not possible, you may have to get a letter from the university saying that they have lost your marksheets and probably the COA will accept that. Good luck!

Now please tell me how to restore it? and apply for life time registration.. Also I have heard that I will have to pay fine of Rs.10 per day , since the time it is lapsed. i.e. since 3 years. Is there a way out from this heavy fine of Rs. @ 10,000.
    Please tell me..
    Hi Varsha,
Since you have failed to pay the renewal fee by the last date, you will have to request the COA to restore your registration by sending a letter of request and paying restoration fees of Rs 1000/- in addition to the one-time renewal fees of Rs 6000/-. The payments should be made separately by Demand Draft/M.O or Cash at the office of the Council. You will also have to send all the relevant documents in original just as you did when registering for the first time along with your original registration certificate. I do not have any information about the late fine.

I understand this may be absurd. I graduated in year 2008. But decided, not to apply for registration till I plan to work on my own projects(call it ethics, i you may). I am also in the final sem of my masters degree now.
As per my research through COA website, there is no deadline for registration. So will it be a problem to register this late after graduation?(Other than this delay there are no vague issues). Also how long will it take for the certificate to be received or returned. Can a personal visit (with the documents & graduation certificates) to the COA Delhi office speed things up?
I see quick responses to the queries here. Thanks for taking the time to respond. And helping us poor souls.
    Hi ethical poor soul,
I do not think there should be a problem in registration. Normally it takes a month to 1.5 months to get your degree certificate back. Honestly I do not know whether the COA returns the degree certificate immediately, if you visit the office personally. But I assume they will. You could call them at the numbers: 91-11-24654172, 91-11-24648415.

I am a licensed architect, but as I was out of India this year I couldn’t apply for a renewal. Can I do it in January 2015.If so what would be the renewal amount that I need to pay.
    Hi Soumya,
Since you have failed to pay the renewal fee by the last date, you will have to request the COA to restore your registration by sending a letter of request and paying restoration fees of Rs.1000/- in addition to the renewal fees (annual or one-time). The payments should be made separately by Demand Draft/M.O or Cash at the office of the Council.

    Hey,
This article was very helpful, especially to me, when I am very picky over details for getting an official procedure done.
I had requested for an alternative transcript that secured all my credits and marks of all semesters altogether as One. This 3-page-long document mentioned my roll number that I had carried during the course as well as my name, in which unfortunately, they missed a vowel in my name, which I had received by post on special request. I am unable to go back to the university and get it undone.
How can i go further about this if i want to apply for this registration at COA? Is there any way I can attach a request letter to consider the document on the basis of matched roll numbers in my degree certificate and the mentioned transcript documents? Please help.

How much time is consumed by the whole registration process and to get the official licence? In case, that I submit my provisional degree for registration and at the same time I have to apply & take admission for masters, how does it work?
    Hi Supriya,
In case Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) degree has not been awarded by a University, you can submit the provisional Certificate/Passing Certificate issued by the University only. The Council of Architecture will not accept provisional certificate from an institution. However, the provisional certificate will not be accepted if the final degree/diploma for the applicant’s batch has already been awarded.

Your registration with the COA should be up to date and then you must approach the municipal authority of your city with the documents required by them. Only after you are registered with the local building authority, can you sign on building sanction plans.

    Hi Prashantini,
In case of one-time payment of renewal fee, the Certificate of Registration is endorsed for ten calendar years at a time. Thereafter, endorsement for further years should be got done from the Registrar of the Council, without making any further payment. But you will have to send your original certificate of registration for endorsement with a self-addressed envelope.

No test is needed for registration, but all the marks cards, degree certificate and other documents should be submitted in the original along with a DD for the registration amount. The originals will be returned after the council has perused them.
