Vastu Guidelines For Doors And Windows | An Architect Explains

In Vastu Shastra, the door and window positions are important because they let in the air, light and energy into the rooms of the house. If they are in the right positions, then  there is a positive flow of air, light and energy from the outside to the inside and from room to room, thus enhancing the health and the lives of the inmates and creating a feeling of contentment and happiness.

Here, I have discussed the Vastu Guidelines for Doors and Windows. Since Vastu Shastra is a science, I have explained the possible scientific reasons and logic on which they were based, so that you an decide what you want to follow and what you don’t.

Even number of doors The answer to the question of the correct number of doors in a house, is an enigma. However, the ancient Rishis have advised that it is better to have even number of doors instead of odd number.

For internal doors – The internal doors can be placed according to the room arrangement and convenience. The Reason – The internal doors should be so placed for easy and comfortable circulation and movement from room to room. It depends on the furniture arrangement in the room.

For the Main door –  However, for the Main door it is advisable to follow the rules explained below. The Reason – Every time you enter your house you activate a presiding energy in relationship to the mandala of the house at that point. A door must be precisely located in order to activate the beneficial energy.

To figure out where to place a main door, imagine that you are standing outside the house, facing the front of the house. Divide the front facade of the house into two parts with an imaginary, middle, vertical line. The door should be placed towards the centre, either in the left or the right half, depending on the direction the house faces.

For a East facing House – Avoid placing a door in the left half (South-East), instead place it in the right half, that is towards the North-East. The Reason – Since the North-East corner of a plot is to be left open, for sunlight to enter the house, it makes sense to enter from this space but only after leaving as much of window openings towards the North and East.

The door should not be at the corner of the walls, but a few feet away from the corner junction. The Reason -Its preferable to have more window openings towards the North and East to allow constant sunlight through the day. Since the door is opaque, it should be placed  away from the N-E corner, more to the centre.

For a South-facing House – Avoid placing a door in the left half (South-West), instead place it in the right half, that is  in the South-East. The Reason- It is always preferrable to have minimum number of openings in the South-West since the hot infra-red rays of the evening sunlight are projected maximum to this direction.

If a house has a main entrance in the South there should be one more corresponding to it in the North direction also. The Reason – To allow the constant light from the North into the house.

For a West-facing house – Avoid placing a door in the right half (South-West), instead place it in the left half, that is  in the  North-West. The Reason It is always preferrable to have few openings in the South-West since the hot infra-red rays of the evening sunlight are projected maximum to this direction.

If a house has a main entrance in the West it should have a corresponding door in the East also. The Reason -To allow maximum, useful UV rays found in the morning sunlight, into the house, since it is beneficial for health of the inamtes. (vitamin D synthesis)

For a North-facing house – Avoid placing a door in the right half (North-West), instead place it in the left half, that is in the North-East. The Reason Its preferable to have more openings in the North and East to allow sunlight constantly, through the day. Since the door is opaque, it should be placed more to the centre of the wall and windows should be kept in the North-East.

The windows should be opposite to the doors so that both the positive and negative cycles are completed. The Reason – This is to allow the proper flow of air from room to room.

The windows in the North wall should be more towards the North-East and should be long and wide.  The Reason – So that air and constant and useful morning light from North-East can permeate the house.

The windows in the East wall should be more towards the North-East and should be long and wide for the same reason as explained above.

Avoid too many windows in the South-West directionsThe Reason – The harmful, hot infra red rays of the Sunlight are projected maximum to the South-West direction in India. Hence it is preferable to have less openings in this direction.

Windows should be long and wide to let in a lot of light

There should be an even number of windows in the house, like 2, 4, 6, 8 etc. Avoid odd number of windows like 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 .  The Reason – It must have something to do with symmetry and the structure of the house, because in earlier times, the buildings had wooden roofs with rafters etc. So the positioning of windows was based on the roof grid. However, you can have any number of windows, depending on your requirement.

This post was about the Vastu guidelines for the positioning of the Doors and Windows during the construction of a House. Read about the different Stages in construction of a House here:

    Dear Sir
we have a south facing house kindly give me suggetion how to make a stair case in which direction
    Hi Rakhesh,
Staircase position is dependent on the plan of the house. A staircase should be placed somewhere centrally so that rooms at the upper floor can be accessed easily without wasting space for accessing. So direction is immaterial.

I have gone through the suggestions given by you. It is excellent and satisfying for which I appreciate you.
Now I am constructing duplex house in first to second floor. My site is west facing with 2 feet extended at south east side. I have made 7 doors in first floor with internal staircase and five doors in second floor. my first floor back door is towards east in the kitchen and pooja room (west facing door) is set in front of it by leave 6 feet space. kitchen and dining are open space. One common bathroom is set in the northwest corner of northeast room with south faceing door but only three feet gap is there between pooja room (west facing door) and bath room. is there any vastu corrections to be done or will it be alright to have the facilities as it is. kindly give your valuable suggestions at the earliest please.
    Thank you
    Hi Kamala,
Thanks for the appreciation. What you have planned seems to be okay.

  • June 9, 2016 at 10:25 am

Dear sir it tops are awesome.we have renovated the house including toilet door and one attached toilet to master bed room now the number of doors is 7.but pooja room door is two sides door is it counted as two door or one single door if we consider as two door then it will be 8 or else it wiĺl be 7.please guide us.
    Hi Nirmala,
The pooja room door is considered as one door opening. You need not break your head over the number of doors in your house. It does not matter in todays rcc constructions.

    Hi Vikas,
Not ideal if the internal door is right in front of the main entrance door.

  • June 28, 2016 at 8:33 am

I am constructing a building,In north west position Septic tank has been placed attached with room wall.Is it bad?
    Hi Abraham,
It is not ideal as the chance of leak or dampness into the room is quite high.

  • July 10, 2016 at 10:49 pm

Hello sir, your website is indeed very helpful, I am purchasing a 3 BHK flat I have north east entrance – 1 door, pooja room – one door, three rooms = 3 doors, attached Bathroom – 1 door, common bathroom – 1 door, one door from Kithchen which goes to utility, there is entrance from hall to common passage which takes us to two entrance which one towards common bathroom (mentioned above) and one towards room (one of the 3 room mentioned above)- should we count this , there is one door from dining to balacony and one from master bedroom which is towards balcony . not sure how to count door – Please guide me
    Hi Mamatha,
Why do you want to count number of doors? In today’s constructions it does not matter if there are even or odd number of doors. But if you insist, then you can count the number of door shutters.

  • July 11, 2016 at 1:59 am

Sir, In our flat entrance corridor iron grill with iron rods doors is there. Is it counted to take as original door.
    Thanking you,
    Hi Chandrarao,
No it is not counted as a separate door because the opening is only one.

  • July 11, 2016 at 2:16 am

Dear Sir, In my Master bed room I have door for attached toilet which takes me to dressing room through which I need to pass to my washroom, I am planning to make one more door between wash room and dressing room, will this door which I am planning to wash room also be counted for Number of doors as per Vastu Please suggest

    Yes it will be counted.

  • July 11, 2016 at 2:49 am

Hello sir , need guidance I have 3 BHK flat in which from hall we have a passage which takes me wash room and one side to Bed room, should we count this passage entrance as one door – Please guide

  • July 12, 2016 at 5:13 pm

I built a new east face house with main entrance door and bed room doors aligned, is it advised to construct compound gate also inline with
    Hi Rana,
Since the main door is aligned with the bedroom door, better keep the main gate a little away and not in line.

  • July 31, 2016 at 10:34 pm

Hello Sir, thank you for your valuable suggestions. I am purchasing a 3 bhk flat (North facing). Number of doors –
    1 main door,
    1 door at kitchen utility,
2 doors for master bed room,
2 doors for children bed room,
1 door for guest bed room,
1 door for master bedroom bath room
1 door for common bath room,
so in total 9 doors are coming. Also there are 8 windows in total.
If i have to make 8 doors in total, which door is i need to remove? master bed room door or Children bed room door?
Please advice me in this regard. thanks in advance.
    Hi Jitendar,
Why do you want to remove a door just to make the number of doors even? This rule applied in the olden days when the construction methods were different and used wood. It does not matter today.

  • August 1, 2016 at 2:48 am

Hello sir, my house is north facing, but the main gate, house entrance gate and staircase gate in a line. All three gates are north facing. Please suugest me there is anything wrong..

    No nothing wrong.

  • August 6, 2016 at 11:18 pm

Dear Sir I have making south facing home please guide where we make main door of home Mahesh Batham
    Hi Mahesh,
In a South facing home, the best position for the main door is the SE quadrant.

  • August 9, 2016 at 3:35 am

Sir in my proposed west face house architect given plan showing main door at west side (north west), 2nd door exactly opposite to this west door means at north east, 3rd door at north side (north east to the hall). 2 doors for 2 bed rooms. 2 doors for 2 attached bathrooms. 1 door for external bathroom which wall not touched at south east. Is it correct or not.
    Hi Ramakrishna,
More than the direction of the doors, focus on the plan of the house. Does it have a free smooth flow? Is it as per your requirement? etc..

  • August 9, 2016 at 6:15 am

    Dear sir,
Am planning to buy a west facing site
    North 40′
    South 45
    East 31
    West 30,

    Site is almost flat,
But it is “East of South East” is extended
    Request your opinion,
    I may construct in 30’x40’only,
    Hi Madhusudan,
It is a goumukh site which is good according to vastu. Your intention of constructing only in the 30×40 portion is the right one. Also, East of South East extension is good according to me.

  • August 9, 2016 at 11:17 am

IS there an issue with locating windows on the corner ?like an “l”
    Hi Christian
There is no issue in having an “L” shaped corner window in modern constructions.

My house is duplex and in the first floor there is grill in between……can we use black colour to paint according to vaastu…
    Hi Vikas,
Yes you can use black to paint the grill. In fact it will make the grill less conspicuous.

  • September 4, 2016 at 2:30 am

    Hi Sir.
My House is a duplex with internal stairs. First Floor has 7 Windows and 5 Doors. While Second Floor has 9 Windows and 6 Doors. Kindly advise if the total number of doors/wndows should be counted as per floor or house, to be an even number?
    Hi Praveeen,
You need to count them individually for each house. But it does not really matter in present day RCC and brick structures.

  • September 10, 2016 at 10:13 pm

Sir, The tips given on your site are really very useful.
I am constructing a house on a 30×40 west facing site. I am constructing 3 bedrooms on the first floor on the front portion and leaving 8 feet space for an open terrace on the back portion of the slab. Can I extend the slab on the SE side by 2 feet? I was told SE extension is not auspicious. Please clarify.
    HI Gopal,
Extensions and cuts are not ideal but that does not mean that you will have problems because of them. There are vastu experts who suggest a remedy for every defect, which you can buy from amazon or some such online site. So is it really so bad to have a so-called vastu defect?? Think about it.

  • September 15, 2016 at 12:12 am

Our rented house is having 1 Main entrance, 2 bedroom doors, 2 bathroom doors, 1 puja room door and 1 in back.
    Is it good or bad??
    Hi Sujata,
Dont waste time on the number of doors. Instead focus on whether you feel happy in this house.

  • September 15, 2016 at 11:03 pm

I am planning to purchase a flat in which total number of doors are 7,
    1 main entrance.
    2 for 2 bed rooms.
    2 for 2 bath room &
    2 for 2 balconies.
Please suggest is it ok to go ahead.
    Hi Ramanath,
Rather than focusing on the number of doors, feel the house. If you feel good in it, then it is good for you.

  • September 22, 2016 at 12:18 pm

I have 5 wooden doors and a plastic Bathroom door .so as per vastu according to your opinion how many doors are there ?? i have a confusion
    Hi Thomas,
Every opening is considered a door. So in your case you have 6 doors.

  • October 3, 2016 at 8:49 pm

Hello! Ours is a east facing independent house. Looking at the statement “doors and windows count must be even numbers 2,4,6,8. Do we have to consider attached bathroom doors also in the total count?
    Hi Mahadev,
If you are counting, then you should include the bathroom doors as well.

  • October 6, 2016 at 9:45 pm

Sir, I have an option to choose from an East facing main door and a North facing main door for two apartments that I can choose from.
    1. The east facing has the main door in the North east Quadrant and the only balcony is in the west. This one has the kitchen adjacent to a common bathroom.
    2. The north facing has the main door in the north west quadrant. The only balcony is in the east.
Rest everything in both apartments seem vastu compliant.
Could you suggest which one should I choose?
    Hi Rucheev,
I am more inclined to the north facing flat. But it is finally your choice. Take a decision based on your gut-feeling.

  • October 8, 2016 at 3:02 am

Hello sir..! We are under construction of a north facing duplex house. Should we count the number of doors and windows individually per floor or else for the entire house?
    Hi Durga,
If you really want to count the number of doors and windows (though in my opinion, they are not necessary), count for the whole house.

  • October 13, 2016 at 2:23 am

    Hello Sir,

  • October 23, 2016 at 9:46 pm

    Hi Sir,
I have 30 40 site east facing site. Entrance is northeast and plan is almost vastu. Need your suggestion in terms of doors. I have 7 doors and 9 windows. 1 main door 2 bedroom doors 2 bathroom doors and 1 pujaroom door and 1 utility room. Please guide me whether it’s as per vastu it’s right or wrong.
    Hi Gopal Krishna,
When everything else is as per vastu, why bother about a trivial thing like the number of doors and windwos, which does not matter in todays constructions.

  • November 10, 2016 at 1:06 am

my newly constructed house is having 7 doors, since it is not auspicious to have 7 doors we are planning to put a door in the attached bathroom, thus bifurcating the toilet and bathing area, can we consider this as one of the door.
    Hi Nandini,
Yes you can consider it as another door.

  • November 10, 2016 at 2:07 pm

I have a house with north facing entrance, thinking of making 2 doors in the rear of the house one from bedroom and other from kitchen. Will this be good ? The new doors would be on the west wall of the house. Please suggest.
    Hi Dev,
From security point of view it is not advisable to have many exit doors.Otherwise it is okay.
