SCIENTIFIC VASTU | KITCHEN | An Architect Explains

The Kitchen is an extremely important part of the house, where healthy and nutritious food for the family is prepared and cooked. Raw and uncooked food is transformed into delicious meals, which provide ‘energy’ to the family. Sometimes, the family eats in the kitchen itself.

vastu-kitchen

You know that the energy you get from the food is positive, if the food you eat makes you happy and content.  If not, it means that you are receiving negative energy from the food. The reason could be that the food is not being prepared well due to some deficiencies in the kitchen. Negative energy starts to affect you physically and mentally and can affect your health. So it is absolutely essential that the kitchen exudes positive energy and suppresses negative energy.

VASTU FOR KITCHEN:

So how can this be achieved? According to Vastu Shastra, the right placement of the kitchen, the door to the kitchen, the fixtures, lighting and the colours can ensure that the Kitchen becomes a positive space. To know more about making your Kitchen a vastu compliant space, read on…..

cooking-in-olden-days
In the days gone by, food preparation and cooking were outdoor activities

Listed here, are some of the Vastu Guidelines for a Kitchen. In ancient times, many activities like cooking, washing of utensils and pre-preparation of food were done outside. Hence Vastu guidelines were primarily based on the Sun and the main wind directions. However today, the Kitchen has become a compact, efficient, safe and easy place to work in and so the planning is different. Yet, some of the vastu principles still hold good.

Since Vastu is a science, there is logic and reasoning behind every guideline. As an Architect, I have attempted to explain each of these guidelines rationally and scientifically under the following headings. This way, you can decide what you want to follow:

What is the best location for a Kitchen?
What are the practical remedies for Kitchen in the North-East defect?
Where should the door and windows in the kitchen be located?
Where should the cooking stove/hob be placed in the kitchen?
What is the best position for the sink in a kitchen?
What are the vastu guidelines for the fixtures in a kitchen?
What are the vastu guidelines for storage in a kitchen?
Why should you eat in the kitchen?
What are the ideal colours for a kitchen?

WHAT ACCORDING TO VASTU, IS THE BEST LOCATION FOR A KITCHEN?
  • First choice for Kitchen location: South-East
  • Second choice for Kitchen location: North-West
  • Avoid Kitchen in the: North-East

Kitchen is best located in the South-East or North-West: The Scientific Reason – In earlier times, when the cooking was done on open stoves outside the house and combustible building materials were prone to catch fire, the cooking fire was preferred in the S-E corner or the N-W corner, where the hot summer wind, blowing from the S-W to the N-E direction could not cause damage by carrying sparks.

Avoid the Kitchen in the North-East : The Scientific Reason Since the constant, morning sunlight enters from the North and East sides, these areas are reserved for a Meditation room and a Living hall from which all other spaces open. Hence it is a waste to have a Kitchen here. But if by chance the kitchen is located in the wrong position, there are remedies which you can read about in my post Remedies for North-East defects.

vastu-kitchen-well-lit
A kitchen should be lit with the morning sunlight
WHAT ARE THE PRACTICAL REMEDIES FOR THE KITCHEN IN THE NORTH EAST DEFECT?

Kitchen in the North-east is considered a defect and should be avoided. The preferred position for Kitchen is the South-East. The Scientific Reason Since the constant, morning sunlight enters from the North and East sides, these areas are reserved for a Meditation room and a Living hall from which all other spaces open. Hence it is a waste to have a Kitchen here.

Remedy for Kitchen in the North-East: In case the Kitchen in the North-East cannot be avoided, here are some simple remedies:

  • Make a small prayer corner in the North East part of kitchen
  • Place bronze bowls at the ceiling of kitchen in upside down position in North, East and North East part – make sure that none of the bowl is directly above gas stove.

WHAT ARE THE BEST VASTU POSITIONS FOR THE DOOR AND WINDOWS IN THE KITCHEN?

The door to the Kitchen should be in the North, East or North-East: The Logic In a South-East kitchen, it makes sense to have an L-Shaped counter on the South and East walls for efficient use of space. Therefore, the entrance can be only from the North or West walls. Since the Living and Dining areas are in the Northern part of the house, it is natural that the door to the Kitchen should be from the North side.

The door should open clockwise: The LogicMost of the population being right handed, it is easier to open the door in a clockwise direction when entering into the Kitchen.

The larger windows should be in the East: The Scientific ReasonThe early morning sunrays are very beneficial to health and the UV rays of the sunlight kill germs. Hence the morning sunlight should be allowed into the house, especially in the Kitchen where germs thrive and multiply. Moreover, the sunlight is good for the health of the person who is busy in the kitchen in the mornings and doesn’t have the time to go out and get exposed.

Additional smaller windows can be in the South, for cross-ventilation: The Scientific ReasonIn a Kitchen, where there is a lot of cooking fumes and odours, cross ventilation will ensure that the hot air and fumes exit out of the house and are replaced with fresh cool air from outside.

vastu-kitchen-window-east
The windows in a kitchen should preferably be in the East
WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES FOR THE POSITION OF THE COOKING STOVE?

The cooking stove should be in the South-East corner of the Kitchen: The Logic In a South-East kitchen, it makes sense to have counters running on the South and East walls, for proper and efficient use of the space. Naturally the S-E corner becomes suitable for the main kitchen appliance, namely the Stove,  as the rest of the counter space can be used for preparing and cleaning food to be cooked.

One should cook facing East: The Scientific Reason Since the women get tied down with kitchen chores from early morning, they don’t get a chance to get exposed to the useful morning sunrays. So the best solution, is to force the women to cook facing East so that they can benefit from the sunlight falling on them.

The cooking stove should not be visible from the outside: The Logic One feels uncomfortable to cook if people can see you from outside. Hence a little privacy helps.

vastu-kitchen-stove-privacy
The cooking stove should not be visible from outside.
WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES FOR THE POSITION OF THE KITCHEN SINK?

The Kitchen sink should be in the North-East: The Scientific ReasonIn earlier days, when there was no running water and water for washing purposes was stored in open vessels, it was preferred in the N-E corner where the morning UV rays would kill the germs and keep the water and the whole area purified. So this rule is not a hard and fast rule.

The Kitchen sink and cooking stove should not be close to each other: The Logic being, fire and water do not go together.

Avoid water taps in the corners of 2 counters: There should be no leaking taps in the kitchen. The Logic It is quite difficult to wash if the sink is in the corner of two counters, as you tend to lean uncomfortably forward. Leaking taps just waste water.

kitchen-sink
Avoid Kitchen sink in the corner of the counter
WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES FOR THE FIXTURES IN A KITCHEN?

The kitchen counters should preferably be on the East and South East walls: The Reason – Since morning sunlight is maximum from the East and the South-East, it makes sense to have the counters in these directions as the person preparing food will spend a lot of time facing these directions.

An L-shaped counter along the SE walls is ideal: The Reason – An L-shaped wall is the most efficient to work with.

The refrigerator should be in the South, West, South-West or North directions of the Kitchen: The Logic Since the counters are fixed on the East and South-East walls of a S-E kitchen, the corners available for appliances like a refrigerator, are the N-W , West or the S-W corners.

The microwave should be in the South-East corner of the Kitchen: The Logic – A microwave just like a cooking stove is used for cooking food and so can be placed next to the stove in the South-East corner.

The exhaust fans should be in the East walls: The LogicSince the cooking is done in the S-E corner, while facing East, it is obvious that the exhaust fan or chimney should be placed here.

Drinking water/water purifiers should be kept in the North, North-East of the Kitchen: The Scientific ReasonWhen water is to be stored, it is better to have it in the N-E corner where the morning UV rays can kill the germs and keep the water purified and clean for consumption.

kitchen-appliances-along-wall
All the kitchen appliances should be kept along the walls
WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES REGARDING STORAGE IN A KITCHEN?

Keep the larder/food storage in the South or West parts of the kitchen: The Reason – In ancient times grains and food was stored in the South or SW corners of the kitchen as the sun’s heat is maximum from these directions and will help to keep the stored items dry and unspoiled.

Avoid overhead storage above the cooking stove: But it is useful to have overhead storage in the rest of the areas. The Logic The space above the stove should be left open or fitted with an exhaust system (like a chimney) for the fumes to dissipate. Otherwise there is the likelihood of the overhead cupboard catching fire. Also cleaning the cupboard, shelf etc will be quite difficult as it will be covered with oil and grease.

larder

WHY IS IT RECOMMENDED IN VASTU, THAT ONE SHOULD EAT IN THE KITCHEN?

The Kitchen is the best place for the daily meals: The Logic In earlier days, the lady of the house first served the meal to the rest of the family before eating herself and so it was convenient for her to make hot food and serve it right there instead of making it before hand and then transferring it all to the Dining room. Moreover, there is a charm in watching the lady cook the food right in front of you. The anticipation of the food makes it taste better and worth the wait.

The dining table should be in the North-West or West and not in the centre of the Kitchen: The Logic If the Dining table is placed in the kitchen, it is best to keep it in a free corner, where there is less activity and the ideal place for that in a S-E kitchen, is the West or North-West corner. If it is placed in the centre of the room, it will be an obstruction in movement and the efficient use of the kitchen.

dining-table-in-kitchen
Ideally, there should be a dining table in the kitchen
WHAT COLOURS DOES VASTU RECOMMEND IN THE KITCHEN?

The colour of the Kitchen walls: It is good to have a lot of green colour in the kitchen. For example green granite for flooring or green pictures, as this helps improve the appetite of the family members, Other suitable colours are soft pink, yellow and orange. The LogicStudies have found that the color of a food can greatly affect how its taste is perceived. Some colours are thought to be stimulating, like the bright yellows and oranges at fast-food outlets that are intended to make you eat more, while others are thought to be soothing, like the greens of a rainforest.

So now you can see how important it is to enhance the positive energy in a Kitchen through design. Since the kitchen is adjacent to the dining room and store Room and leads to the kitchen backyards, it is important that these spaces too are designed in such a way that they are full of positive energy.  Read about them here:

    Hi,
Currently my kitchen is on SouthEast. However, the location of the stove dictates that the cook faces south during cooking. I heard this is not good.
Is there any remedy as I can’t change the location of the stove.
    Hi Manimaran,
It is always better not to do activities for long periods of time while facing South.

Sir,we are planning to buy a flat. I have a clarification. The kitchen is in the north west quadrant, starting from the center point of north and extending towards the west direction. But it is not located in the north west corner. Is it OK if the kitchen is in the Northwest quadrant but not in the corner?

    Dear sir,
Greetings,This is Rajaa from Bangalore,i have gone through ur blog regarding Kitchen vaasthu,It is very usefull.
Im constructing independent house now,I need some clarification from you regarding my ongoing kitchen construction.
my site is south face,im keeping my kitchen in north-west side(in deep vaasthu search SE is best for kitchen and cook should face towards East,Hence mine is south face i went for NW kitchen).
In NW kitchen Which side is best for gas stove and which side cook should face?In many Vaasthu sites suggesting (South and Notrth should avoided,West face cooking-Womens will have health problems, and financial loss),so im so much confused about my gas stove position and towards cooking face, kindly give me a suggession.
Due to NW kitchen East face cooking and SE Gas stove not at all Possible in that room,so i plan to keep my gas stove at west side towards north-west and cook will face west while cooking, is it correct as per 100% vaasthu? give me a suggestion.
Thank u sir,Im waiting for ur Valuable reply.
    Hi Rajaa,
Ideally you should face East so that you get the benefits of the morning sunlight. But this makes sense only if there is a window on this side. In your case since the kitchen is in the NW, it is unlikely. So, place the gas on the side that has a window, but not under the window. However, avoid facing South.

pls answer as soon as possible.
    Hi Sangeeta,
If possible, have a U-shaped kitchen or a L-shaped one. You can read more about it in my post on designing the arrangement in a kitchen. Place the gas sove on the west wall and in case of a U-shaped kitchen, place the fridge on one of the arms and the sink on the other arm. If it is an L-shaped one, place the sink and fridge on the other arm.

It has a L shaped Platform facing E(longer) and the smaller side on the South with a water sink on its rt end.(While washing the dishes, we need to stand in south facing). We have a door after the sink to go kitchen balcony. Many are suggesting to change the sink to N-E position. Please suggest.
    Hi Hyndavi,
The present position seems to be okay because your window will most probably be in the south wall facing the balcony. It is better to have a sink where there is light. It is inevitable that you may stand facing south for some time in any room. That will not affect your health adversely. It is only when you sit for long periods of time facing South, that there may be a negative effect.

    Hi Ravindra,
It is very easy for people to suggest that you change the sink position to an ‘ideal position’, the NE. But practically it involves breaking walls to change the water lines, the rearrangement of your cabinets and a patched up job. I suggest you stick to the present position as there is no harm in facing west.

The sink is in the NE part of the kitchen. But how should it be placed ?
Should The person using the sink ideally face North or East ?
    Please advise. Thank you.
    Hi Gautham,
Honestly, it does not matter. However, if you want to have it all perfectly in accordance with Vastu, then place it so that you face East. But then again, look at the practicality of that position and make sure that you are not inconvenienced while working at the sink.

    Hi Haresh,
The only problem with toilets above kitchen is that, in case the toilet floors leak due to faulty workmanship, it could seep into the kitchen. However, it is very rare nowadays especially in houses. Just make sure that during the construction, the sinking, filling and waterproofing of the toilet floor is done properly.

    Hi Amit,
You can buy any colour that you like. But as an architect I recommend that you buy a colour that goes with your kitchen counter. For example a black glass one will sit well in a black granite counter and contrast well in a white counter.

There’s window too above the western platform. A door opens to a small balcony and a wash area towards the west side(next to the water sink). Till now i used to cook facing south with my microwave in the mid section of ‘L’ and water pot on the smaller side of ‘L’, under the window (West) knowing that both directions are not recommended and structural modifications cannot be done, please suggest the right direction for cooking and any other remedy to be adopted.
    Regards, MS
    Hi MS,
Since you have been cooking in this direction for so long, why do you want to change? I think you should stick with this position considering all practical aspects. However, if it is bothering you so much, then put a table on the eastern wall and place the stove in that direction.

    Hi Sir,
Thanks for providing such a good site with all required information. Now I am confused by different view given by other vastu consultants and not sure to keep my apartment or sell it off. Below are the details. Kitchen – Falls mid of West – Provision to cook facing West or South is only possible. Sing is at North-west. Its a open kitchen with dinning hall in East. Master bed room – North West – Facing South. Attached bathroom facing North.
Guest/Child bed room – North East facing south and balcony facing East.
Main Door – It was facing South, I changed slightly and made it East facing by changing the main door. Main Toilet – Next to Guest/Child bed room – Facing West. Please suggest your changes and comments and clear my confusion. Should I retain this apartment or sell it off!!!
    Hi Madhu,
Why are you thinking of such drastic measures? The layout more or less seems to be okay, according to me. So stick with it. Just make sure the circulation between rooms is smooth and the furniture can be placed without coming in the way. Otherwise, make some changes by shifting the doors.

No it is not acceptable as you have to step down 3 steps. It will be impractical to carry food and provisions up and down the steps. Moreover, the kitchen should be in the ground floor near the dining area. Find a space, otherwise make the dining room, a kitchen-cum-dining space.

Please give me suggestion. Thank you in advance
    Hi Ashwini,
Just because Vastu Shastra recommends that the kitchen should “ideally” not be in the North-East, it is not a hard and fast rule. In fact in some parts of the country (Kerala), I have come across kitchens in the North-East. Since you cannot anyway relocate it, you have to stop feeling ‘helpless’ and look at it positively. Facing North while cooking is good for you.

    Hi,

I have recently purchased a flat facing north-east, the kitchen is in south-east corner, but the face while cooking would be towards north-east and the sink is in south-east corner.

Could you please suggest is it fine as per vastu.
    Thanks
    Hi Mohit,

Your suggestion expected in this regard.
    With best wishes and regards.

    Hi Dulal Baruah,
Why do you feel dissatisfied? Is it because there is a general taboo against black colour in Indian culture? Most commonly used granite counters in India are the black ones as they are quite dense and less likely to get stained or scratched. But then, if you feel psychologically unhappy about it, why suffer? Replace the counter.

Is it recommended for cooking facing west direction/south direction?
    Hi Nilanjana,
The preferred directions are North and East, but if you do not have that option you can cook facing west. Facing South should generally be avoided, as it affects the magnetic equilibrium of our bodies.

    Hi,
Recently, I shifted into a rental flat in Ghaziabad. I am facing lot of money-loss problem. Later I came to know that in my kitchen, cooking is South direction facing, and there is no option to change the direction in kitchen.
Is there any remedy for the same, or I should change the flat immediately.
    Regards,
    Rajneesh
    Hi Rajneesh,
Cooking, facing South is not advisable since it can affect the magnetic equilibrium of the body. I will not connect your money problems with this, but you are obviously disturbed. So make some changes.

In a North-west kitchen, the counters will most likely be in the North and West. If the North option is not possible then you can have the stove in the West.

SOUTH WEST IS SUITABLE FOR KITCHEN ? OR NOT?
    Hi Sankar,
I have heard that the SW is not recommneded for the Kitchen. But according to me all corners SW, NE, SE, NW are suitable. It all depends on the orientation of your site. In fact, the NE which is considered taboo for kitchens in most of the country is the preferred position in Kerala!

The dimensions of the kitchen would be 18 x 13.
We plan to have the dinning also in the kitchen.
    Thanking you,

    Hi Sudha,
In a North west Kitchen the counters are generally in the north and west sides. You can place your stove in the North counter. Since you have a large kitchen you may be able to have a counter in the East, then place the stove in the East.

Keep the cooking range in the North. The sink can be in the North if there is ample space after the range. Otherwise keep it in the South.

    Dear Sir,

Have been reading your Vastu features. We recently have bought an apartment, it’s a duplex apartment on the top floors.

The apartment is facing towards the east and we have a study room with a toilet behind and then we have staircase going up in the middle on the left side of the door. Further the steps..which is left side of the steps is the kitchen whose door is facing the west.

Would like to convert the study room as a pooja room and keep the toilet room as store room. which means no toilet, will be an empty room. Will that be fine…Can this study room be used as pooja room and the toilet to be converted as an empty room for yoga, meditation or store room for food items. like grains etc
The apace above this room is a dressing room and the toilet above. Will this be a problem
My second question is if the kitchen is in the right place.
Can we send you the floor plan to make it more clearer
    Thanks Shashi
    Hi Shashi,
Your proposals regarding the pooja room and store room seem to be fine. But I have no idea where your kitchen is located.

Hi, I am planning to buy a new flat the concerns are as mentioned below.
    1) Kitchen is in North-west direction, lot of people are saying me to not to go for it since it is not in South-east direction.
    2) Children’s bed room is in South-east direction, I learnt from the web that children’s staying in this kind of bed room will not show interest in study and will become arrogant.
Please clarify these doubts so that I can take decision.
Note : remaining things are as per vastu.
    Hi Rudra,
The North-west is the second best position for a Kitchen according to Vastu. Similarly The South-East is a the best position for a children’s bedroom. So rest easy!

    Hi Dilip Kumar,
Just to reassure you, the vastu pundits recommend the North-East as the best corner for the Kitchen in Kerala. So there is no restriction and accept it as such. If you still feel uncomfortable, then try to locate your stove in the SE corner of the kitchen.

    Hi Sundaravalli,
An East facing cooking platform is good for you as you will get beneficial morning sunlight. The entry is also in the North East which is ‘ideal’.

CONGRATULATIONS / THANKS for your wonderful interpretation on VASTU for our GenNEXT….

All the above suggestions are based on SOUTH EAST kitchen….
For this we can place stove @ south east corner & cook can face east direction…

As per your advice THE BEST LOCATION FOR A KITCHEN?
    South-East or North-West

If we choose North west corner kitchen for a south facing house
Which is the best position to place stove / cook facing?

For the NORTH WEST kitchen the windows will come only in NORTH & WEST….
So can we take for granted – North west corner stove / Cook can face west which will give better ventilation & lights… ( SUN will come to west side after mid day)
This is quite opposite to what you have suggested for south east kitchen….
    Need your expert advice…
    Hi Ragel,
I have tried to explain why Vastu recommends the South-East as the “ideal’ corner for a kitchen. But it is possible to put a kitchen in the SE corner only if you have an ‘ideal’ site with a North orientation. In a Site with South Orientation, Vastu recommends a kitchen in the North-West. In this position, one will get direct sunlight only after midday which is okay because it is good to get sunlight anytime, (though the early morning sun is preferable). By this logic, the SW and the NE are also suitable as there is direct sunlight here, at some time of the day.
Because it is impossible for everyone to get the perfect site with the right orientation, I always say that there are no fixed rules in Vastu. Based on what is available to you, you must decide what is possible and best suited for you while keeping the scientific bases of Vastu recommendations in mind.

Is there any problem as per vastu shastra?
    Hi Koyel,
In some places like Kerala, NE is the preferred position for a Kitchen. I personally feel any position is okay, as long as there is ample light into the Kitchen (though I am more inclined to the SE, NE and East positions, because of the morning sunlight). However, when buying a house you must be convinced before you make a decision.

    Hi Praveen Kumar,
Obviously you are unhappy with the present house and that is why you are looking for another place. The house you have seen seems to have everything in the ‘right’ place as per Vastu. But in doing so, having a kitchen slab in the Bedroom does not make sense. This is an example of how the landlords go to ridiculous extents to have the basic vastu parameters right, just so that they can get good rent. Anyhow if you are not uncomfortable with the cooking and washing in your bedroom, go ahead.

    Hi Rahul Tiwari,
Following everything according to Vastu Shastra does not guarantee a happy, content life, if the inmates are basically unhappy. You need to look into yourselves and change the way you presently think and find some answers. Just as a start, to feel more positive, probably you could think of doing a pooja in your home. Also be rid of all clutter – empty your wardrobes and rooms of all unnecessary things. All the best.

    Hi Atul Singh,
It depends on the material that you opt for. Granite is the most preferred material for kitchen counters because it is stain and water resistant unlike most other materials. But in that the darker coloured ones are popular because they are more stain-resistant than the lighter ones.

Our kitchen is at the center of our house. The cooking system is so that the cook looks toward south while cooking. But, due to some space constraints we were thinking of turning the gas oven towards north. The cook will look toward north while cooking. Is there any problem as per vastu shastra?
    Hi Jayashree,
Actually changing the arrangement so that the cook faces North is better because facing South for long periods can affect the magnetic equilibrium of the body. Maybe subconsciously you must not have been comfortable in the “South facing position”!!!

    Hi Amit,
I am assuming that you want to change the kitchen position from the North-East due to Vastu. If you are insistent on making this change, then shifting it to the mid north is okay. However, it would be preferable to have the counters in the North and west of the kitchen since North west is a good position for Kitchen.

    Dear Sir,

Your sight is very informative. I write to findout a remedy for construction of Kitchen against vastu principle.

Our house is facing the south and Kitchen is in the North-east Corner, the platform of the kitchen is on the eastern and northern wall and Gas Burner is placed on the eastern platform towards south and the sink is on the northern platform towards east and the doors are on the south & north walls – face to face. The door on the north wall (to go out) opens inside clockwise and the door on the south wall opens to the kitchen from the Living / dining room anti clockwise. Please advice Vastu Rememdy, without spending much money.
We stay in Cochin and in our Tharavadu and other houses in our native place have kitchen in the north-east direction.
    Hi Saraswathi,
I am glad you raised this. I have always stressed that Vastu does not advocate fixed positions for rooms. There are ‘ideal’ positions recommended based on sunlight and other factors. While North-East is considered taboo for a kitchen in most parts of India, it is the favoured position in Kerala. And kerala houses are mostly vastu compliant.
I do not see any problem in your kitchen. In fact the cooking stove is in the SE corner and the sink is in the NE corners of the kitchen which are all as per vastu. So do not waste money and be happy with what you have.

    hi,
i want renovate my kitchen, so i want to ur good advice.my kitchen is not big but i want perfect for us.my kitchen east side is corner like ‘L’ shape.northwest is stright wall.if i make ‘L’ shape it so small for me & if i make northwest its bigger for me.& one more thing northwest side one big window & i see everything in outside.if i make my kitchen northwest side & i put my stove in the N-W WINDOW side its ok or the sink is ok in northeast side corner.pls give my answer as soon as.bcoz i want to make my kitchen early.so plz sir reply me i m waiting for ur good advise. thanx
    Hi Yashi,
If the kitchen in the North west can be bigger, then have it there. In fact it has other advantages like the big window. It is better to place the sink in front of the window and the stove on a north or east facing counter.

    Hi,
It is a wonderful explanation to vaastu science. Although we are not really too much into this until we decided to buy a house of our own.
It is small house which is West facing while all other parameters “look” to be okay, our kitchen has a common wall shared with master bed room bathroom and it is actually the place where the provision for Gas stove is provided.
If it should ideally not be the case, can we have some work around that will nullify the ill effects of sharing common wall with toilet/bathroom?
    Thanks for your help !

    Hi Ranjan-Deepika,
It is better to look at the larger picture while applying Vastu to a space and not fret about the smaller details.

    Sir,
We are building new house from basement. And tried to make according to Vastu .i believe every one has their own ways of explanation. Now my house is constructed 40% , other half is left .How do i go about the consultation as 1 of the vastu consultant has spoken lot of negetives about it and now we are in a fix
    Kindly guide
    Hi Nidhi,
I suggest that you should ignore the vastu consultant’s negative comments. Go through my posts on Vastu Shastra, use your common sense and reasoning to make your house best suited for you but with a lot of light and ventilation. Even if construction is half complete, you could arrange the interiors and furniture in such a way as to allow free movement within the house. So do not panic.

    Dear Sir,

I’m glad to find such a site to know the right functional solutions inside a house.
Actually I’m designing a villa in the middle east.

The location of the kitchen is in South-West with one window in the south plus a door which leads me to a balcony in the north.
    My questions are:
1-What are the problems that may cause with respect to the wind passage and the sunlight ?
2-What are the solutions that must be done?
Looking forward to hear from you
    Best regards.
    Hi Amal,
I am not sure of the wind velocity in this area. If it is a reasonably windy place, then there is the chance of a constant wind current flowing through the kitchen from the balcony door to the window or vice versa. Therefore while designing the kitchen layout, make sure that the gas stove is not in this line. Of course if you are using electric stoves it is not a problem.

    Dear Sir,

Itsgood to read scientific reasons than just believing things without explanation.
We have kitchen sink in North direction but you said it should be in north-east…..now we can not change direction….is it OK to have in north or there is remedy for the same…
    Manish
    Hi Manish,
Thank you. It does not matter if it is in the North or North-East. This is why I have given scientific explanations for the Vastu ‘ideal’ positions.

    Dear Sir/Madam
Our house has a open kitchen layout otherwise it meets most of the vaasthu requirement except the sink placement which is at the south. Any person entering the house can clearly see the kitchen since there are no separation walls or doors . I came to know from an unknown source that open kitchen affects the health of the main female person of the house(mother/wife). Please help me in this regards. I need your feedback on this at the earliest.
    regards
    Arpitha
    Hi Arpita,
Nowadays most apartments have open kitchen layouts as this arrangement makes the spaces look more spacious and better ventilated. But the disadvantage is the lack of privacy. Now which one is better – a closed kitchen or an open one? This depends on what makes you comfortable. If you feel self conscious when outsiders enter the house, then you can close it up with the help of a wooden partition. Otherwise leave it as it is.

Your site is very much interesting. We have kitchen at SE. But is is exactly opposite to the
main door and when we are cooking the stove and whole kitches in visible to outsiders.
We have kept a curtain to the door of kitchen while entering into the kitchen from main door is it ok. Please suggest.

    Regds,
    Madhavi
    Dear Madhavi,
Without even being aware of Vastu, you have put up a curtain in the kitchen door as you must have started feeling self-conscious when outsiders enter the house. This is why Vastu is relevant even today. It is completely based on science and logic. To prevent the situation you are in, Vastu recommends that the kitchen should not be visible from the main door. But, like i said, it is only a recommendation, not a taboo. So if you find yourself in this situation, you should think of a practical solution for the problem (the fact that you feel conscious and exposed to outsiders). I think you, Madhavi, have solved it in the best way!

    Dear Sir,

I want to know that Can kitchen can be a step or two step below than the normal flooring with other parts of the house i.e. i want kitchen to be kept little down than the ground level, so we can getdown to kitchen from one or two steps

Would this be preferred in Vastu

    Dear Asha,
Common sense and vastu go together and it is obvious that it is best to have all rooms with the same floor level – Because it is very easy to trip if there is a change in level, especially for older people. Moreover, it is not comfortable to carry food and other things to and from the kitchen that is at another level. So avoid it.

    Dear Sir,

I have to place the stove on the south side platfarm and will face south while cooking, is it ok.

also there is no water connection from the water storage tank which i have in my bathroom, I want to place water tank in the kitchen on the loft of east wall. Is it ok. Os there any problem having water storage tank in the kitchen ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Dinesh
    Hi Dinesh,
Generally it is not advisable to face South for long periods of time as it can affect the magnetic equilibrium in your body, negatively. So, facing south while cooking should be avoided as much as possible. Usually a kitchen has 2 counters so place your stove on the other counter.
As to the second part of your question, having separate water tanks for bathroom and kitchen does not make sense. But if you have no other choice, it’s okay to place it in the loft in the Kitchen. However, it will be unsightly. If it can be hidden behind some overhead shutters, it will be fine.

    Hi,

I was interested in knowing the effects of a chimney/fire-place in the North side of an apartment. Are there any ill[-effects for this?

    Thanks in advance.
    Deepak
    Hi Mr Deepak,
Normally there is constant natural light from the North direction, in countries in the Northern hemisphere. Hence it is advisable to have more windows on this side- a chimney tends to block up this side wall. However, if you feel you are getting enough light and ventilation into the room, inspite of the chimney, then there is no harm in having one in the North.

    Dear sir,
Could you please teel me if we cud hve a open kitchen with dining n living rom
    thank you

    Dear Ms Swati,
There are no restrictions in vastu as long as there is enough light and air in each and every room. so an open kitchen is fine as long as it gets enough light and ventilation. However, it is not preferred to have an open kitchen right in front of the main door to the living, because the person in the kitchen may feel self conscious every time guests come in and if it is too close to the living room area, the exhaust fumes may be annoying to guests.

I really like your explanations. We’re in the process of building a house, our stove can be placed so cook faces west or North only. Which direction do you recommend? The main entrance is North facing and entry to kitchen is east and west facing. Windows in the kitchen are on the south wall.
I would greatly appreciate your help.

    thanks a lot

    Dear Mr ds,
Between the two options for position of a stove, I would suggest that you go for the side that is equidistant to all areas in the kitchen. Also make sure that when you stand at the stove your shadow does not fall on the cooking. Of course this can be solved by having a hood with light above.

    Hi Brg,
Thank you. Initially, I was not responding to questions as they are specific to each person and my posts are meant for the general public. Moreover, being a practicing architect I had to find the time. But now I have started answering the questions because I realised that many of you have similar doubts. Hopefully my answers will be able to reassure all of you.

    Sir,
I have read your scientific explanation and it is so very correct.
I have a question regarding the position of stove. Our flat is in rectangle shape and has a kitchen in the north-west quadrant. If I place the stove in south east corner facing east, it touches the north axis in the north west quadrant. If I place the stove on the west platform, it falls in the north-west quadrant. Please advise if it is ok to face west while cooking. or please give us better options as per vastu.

    Dear Ms Aparna,
I haven’t understood your doubt clearly. But I suggest that you should choose the position such that the stove is more or less central and equidistant from the other areas of the kitchen. Also, it is better if there is adequate light preferrably sunlight falling on your stove to enable you to see better and since it has germicidal benefits.

    Hi Aneeta,
Appreciation from a fellow architect is always welcome. Thank you. I feel you are well equipped, as an architect, to use your common sense and skills to redo your office. But, you must make some changes, whether it is a rearrangement of furniture or whether you bring in more light into the space, because the modifications will psychologically make you believe that there will be positive changes in the near future. Good luck!

Dear sir,i have read your explanation, i just want to know, we are about to sift to a new rented house, but the kitchen is in mrd north n cooking platform is in north.
One bedroom is in south west , n another is in south direction. There is two enters one is east n another is south. Is this house is suitable. Please help
    Thanks & Regards, Harleen

    Dear Ms Harleen,
From a practical point of view you should not worry too much about the vastu of a rented house, since your stay is temporary. I keep saying in my blog, that as long as all the rooms have adequate light and ventilation the vastu of the house should be okay. And most important, when you stand in that space listen to your instinct. If you feel good then it is good for you, otherwise better to avoid it. You have the choice of many others.

we r abt to shift our rented place, so i cannot see vasthu wherever i go. we r satisfied with the directions at the new house, the kitchen at SE. but cooking shud be facing SE as well . so i was a bit confused. after reading ur explanations, it sounds practical and understandable . for every vaasthu ,there is something scientific reason behind it.
    thanks a lot.

    Hi Subha,
Thank you for taking time to give me your feedback. The purpose of my Vastu Shastra posts is to help my readers use the scientific reasoning and logic in making their space the best. Sometimes, for example in rented accommodation not much modifications can be done. In such situations, using logic and commonsense, one can arrange the furniture in such a way as to enable the smooth flow of enrgy “prana” through the house. This can create positivity in the house.

    Dear Ms Chanda,
It is impossible to have everything perfectly according to vastu. Vastu guidelines have been handed down to us just so that we can understand the basic essence. Using your common sense and with what is possible, you should make the best of a space so that it is efficient, well lit and a nice place to use and work in. So in a kitchn if you can place the stove, fridge and sink in such a way that all three are easily accessible and equidistant, then your kitchen becomes an efficient space. Moreover, if the stove and sink get adequate light then nothing like that.
