KITCHENS | An Architect Explains
A Kitchen is a room or part of a room used for cooking and food preparation. It may also be used for dining and entertaining. A kitchen is typically equipped with a stove, a sink, a refrigerator, kitchen countertop and kitchen cabinets. In addition there may be a microwave oven, a dishwasher and other electric appliances.
As An Architect practising in India, while designing a house I have to keep in mind every room’s furniture arrangement to decide the size. If there is one room that requires important consideration, it’s definitely the kitchen. The kitchen has to allow for food preparation, storage, waste management, entertainment and a comfortable dining area.
In the design of the kitchens, the arrangement of the ‘work areas’, the positioning of doors and windows, the types of materials used are important considerations to make it a hygienic, easy to maintain and efficient space. Here, I have discussed all these factors under the following headings:

MATERIALS AND ACCESSORIES USED IN KITCHENS:
It’s best to choose all of the appliances, materials and finishes down to the hardware before the project begins. That way, you will have a truly realistic idea of how much the project will cost. Here I have discussed the commonly used kitchen accessories and fixtures and the advantages and disadvantages of materials used as Kitchen counter tops or back splashes.
VASTU SHASTRA GUIDELINES FOR KITCHEN:
The ancient Indian science lays down guidelines for the ideal location of Kitchens and the spaces associated with and near the kitchen, such as the kitchen backyard and the dining room. Sometimes I refer to Vastu Shastra guidelines to decide the best positions for the fixtures like the sink, cooking hob, fridges because Vastu is based on scientific reasoning.
