According to Vastu Shastra, the Site ‘Shape’ affects the well being of the inmates. Some shapes have a good effect, while others have a bad effect and some others can be used after making corrections by building a ‘Vastu’ compound wall in a suitable shape. 
The shape of a site plays an important role in the overall energy balance of any plot but just the shape must never be the only criteria for accepting or rejecting a plot. All the Vastu Shastra factors including the shape of the plot  must be taken into consideration before deciding on a site. 
Since Vastu is a science, every guideline is based on logic and reasoning. As an Architect, I have attempted to explain these guidelines rationally and scientifically under the following headings, so that you can decide what you want to follow and what you don’t, instead of blindly following them like a superstition:

What is the best shape of a site and what are the effects of different shaped sites?
What are the effects of odd dimensions in a site?
In Vastu Shastra, is there any solution for odd shaped sites?



squareSquare shaped site is the best shape: According to Vastu, it ensures the inmates all round prosperity and happiness. The Reasoning- In earlier times, since most houses were designed around a central square courtyard for good cross-ventilation and protection from the hot summer heat, a square Site was considered the best, as the Site could be used fully, without any wastage of space around it.


Rectangle shaped Site is also considered good: especially if the longer sides runNorth to South, rather than West to East. It bestows good health, wealth and prosperity. The Reasoning- Like in a square site, it is easy to design a square or rectangle shaped house in a rectangle site even though there will be some extra land around the house. But this space can be  used for trees, outhouse etc and hence is not wasted.

Today, in the modern context, as an Architect, I also subscribe to this view. I find the rectangle shape the best for Sites- It is easier to design a house on rectangular lines since this allows for a good flow of interior spaces and the proportion of the rectangle’s sides are most suitable in designing rooms. It may be for this reason that Sites in cities are usually available in rectangular  shapes such as 30’x40′, 40’x60′, 50’x80′ etc.

triangleTriangle shaped Site is not considered good: However, if the site is very big, then it can be used by constructing a Vaastu compound wall so that it appears to be a square shaped site and then designing the house within it. The Reasoning- In a triangular site, it is difficult to design a square or rectangular house, which is the preferred shape for an efficient plan. There will be a lot of wastage of land on all three corners and very little space on the periphery of the house. Also, the plinth area of the house will be much less than, if the same plan is drawn on a square or rectangular site of the same area.

circleCircular/Elliptical/Oval shaped Sites are not considered good for houses: According to Vastu, such Sites are only good for constructing circular/elliptical shaped buildings, like public buildings. The Reasoning- Just like in a triangle shaped site, it is difficult to construct a rectangle or square house and there will be a lot of odd-shaped waste land around and hence is not considered worth buying for a house.

trapeziumPentagon, Hexagon, Octagon shaped Sites are not considered good: However, if these shapes are made rectangular or square by building a Vastu compound wall, so that it appears to be a square or rectangular Site, it can be used. The Reasoning- Just like in a triangle shaped site there will be lot of wastage of land around the building and so is  not considered worth the money you spend for the land.

l-shapeL-Shaped Site is not good for a house: However, if it is possible to buy the site on the inside of the L-shaped site to form a rectangle site, then it is fine. Or if the arms are wide enough then the site can be fenced off into a rectangle and the remaining portion can be used for a garden or  some other structure. The Reasoning- It will be difficult to design a square or rectangle shaped house in a L-shaped plot, unless the arms are very wide.



goumukhGou-mukh (Cow faced) site is considered auspicious: According to Vastu, if the plot is narrow in the front and wide at the back, like the face of a cow, it is auspicious. The Reasoning- A square or rectangle shaped house can be designed in this plot with some excess land in the back which can be used for various things like a kitchen garden, outhouse etc.

simhaSimha-mukh (Lion faced) Site is considered inauspicious: According to Vastu, if the plot is wide in the front or entrance and narrow at the back, like the face of a lion, it is inauspicious. The Reasoning- In this plot, though a rectangle or square shaped house can be designed, the excess land will be in the front, and an outhouse or kitchen garden cannot be placed here. So the excess space will be wasted and hence not considered worth the money spent.

cutSites with cut corners are not good: If possible, you should be able to purchase the cut part as well, so that the site looks whole. The Reasoning- It will be difficult to design a house if any of the corners are cut, as some parts of the house will not have proper ventilation.

Sites with cut-corners in the North-East are not good and  should not be purchased. It is like a headless body, because as per Vastu Purusha Mandala the Vastu Purusha’s head lies in the North-East. The Reasoning- The North-East is the direction from which the sun light engulfs the house in the morning and hence should be kept open without any obstructions. So, if it belongs to someone else, that portion cannot be kept open to the useful sunlight.

Sites with projections/extensions in the North or East are considered good: The Reasoning- The North-East is the direction from which the sun light engulfs the house in the morning and so if this corner is projected, there can be a lot more open space that will ensure more unobstructed sunlight.

Sites with projections/extensions in the North-West, South-East or South-West are not considered good: but can be used after corrections by building a Vaastu compound wall. The Reasoning – Having open spaces to the South and West of a site are not preferred, as the hot sunrays projected towards these directions, will heat up the house.

Irregular plan



Irregular shaped sites have a negative effect on the human psyche, but can be used after building a square or rectangular compound wall around it: The Reasoning:  The compound wall protects the building and the space surrounding it from negative energies and so, in irregular shaped properties, square or rectangular shaped compound walls can be  built and the remaining area should be left for growing trees and plants.

    Good Afternoon sir,

    I have a Purchased a Plot in “L Bow ” Shaped Plot.

    Dimensions are

    North -9′ feet
    South – 27’8″ feet
    west – 25’6″ feet
    South-East Corner -20’3″ feet
    North-East Corner -25’2″ feet

    This is plot is having a North East facing Road.
    Is it suitable for Residential House? Please advise me sir. I am Waiting for your Valubale Suggestions.

    I am unable to visualise the site plan. From what you have described, it appears to be a 5 sided site with the NE corner cut. If that is the case, according to Vastu it is not ideal. But since yours is a North facing plot, this cannot be considered very inauspicious in Vastu. Just make sure that your house is designed in such a way that you are able to benefit from the sunlight in the NE corner.

    Hi, we have purchased an east facing site which is 40ft in front and 47 ft at the back which makes the north west corner extended than the north east corner. The house is built in 30*40 area leaving rest of the space towards north end vacant. please advise if any corrections need to be made.

    I am planning to buy a vacant land which is north east facing, the only problem is – it is not a perfect rectangle. The dimensions are
    1. Front- 22.5m
    2. Back- 22 m
    3. Right Side- 51m
    4. Left side- 48 m
    The front of the land is in a straight line . I will be building a rectangular house on it.

    It is an irregular shaped site. But being longer on the Eastern side, it is advantageous as you can get a lot of sunlight especially in the morning. Build a regular rectangular house and grow plants in a rectangular shape around the house, so that the irregular corners are regularised.

    The site seems to be okay though it is not clear in which direction there is an extension. If it is in the NE it is very good according to vastu. But anyhow, construct a rectangular house on it.

    I have a question.. Im planning to buy a road facing – West facing SherMukhi plot ( wider at front and narrow at the back). Many people are saying it is bad and not good for residential purpose and resale value will take a hit..

    I would not treat the site as a typical “shermukhi” site, because the difference between the back and front dimensions is just a few inches. But then it all depends on how you view things and the effect of your friends advice. Like I always tell my readers, do a simple “feel” test. Spend some time in the site in solitude and “feel” it. If you feel good then go for it, otherwise avoid it. It is [possible to design a rectangular house in your site.

    I am planning to buy a site of 2720 sq ft with a house built of 747.50 sft; West facing; North to South – both front and back 40 ft; West to East: North side 67 ft & South side 68 ft. because of 1 feet, the perfect rectangular shape is affected.
    Right side of the house from entrance (south side of the plot) mango, coconut and Banana trees are there.
    Please advise whether as per vastu this plot is okay for buying?

    A difference of 1 foot will not affect the vastu of the site adversely because you can always build a rectangular house. Also, the presence of useful trees are an advantage. But, whether this site is good for you, I cannot say. You should go by your “gut feeling” when you stand in the site. If it is a positive feeling, then go for it otherwise avoid it.

    I wish to purchase a building on plot have following dimensions, the plot is east facing and have road at north side as well,
    East side 31.9 feet
    West side 36.3 feet
    south side 56.3 feet
    North side 56.3 feet

    The NW is extended 2.5 feet compared to NE The SW is extended 2 feet compared to SE.
    The building have 3 shops at east side and a house behind facing north, on both ground and first floors. The building is built on rectangular shape.

    According to me the site seems to be fine. But the final decision is yours.

    I have seen a west facing plot with southwest extension. But builder is telling that he will cut it in a rectuangular shape and build a compound wall and leave the traingle shaped southwest extension and not registering it on my name. Can I buy the plot and construct a house ?

    It is always preferable to build on a rectangular plot instead of one with odd corners. So as long as you are not paying for the extension, I do not see a problem.

    Yeah it is fine to build a rectangular house. Just make sure that you plant hedges in a rectangular shape around the house, so that it appears like a rectangular site.

    The best test is to “feel” the apartment. Gauge your feelings when you are in the apartment and see if you feel positive or negative. If you feel it is good for you, then go for it.

    It is nice to have a U shaped building as you can incorporate greenery into the U. But I would suggest, you build it facing East so that all the rooms will get ample light from the East instead of the west which will be very hot.

    It is a goumukh plat, that is with narrow fronts and wider backs which is good according to vastu. But it does not have 90 degree corners and the site dimensions are small. So when you construct a house, you will have to build a regular rectangular house within the available space, which will not be much. So you could have small rooms and a not a very efficient plan. So think of all these factors before you make a decision.

    By saying that the shadow should not fall, it means that the temple should not be too close and too tall. But in your case it is not the case. So you can consider it, but again it is your decision – go by your gut feeling.

    I have a plot (around 235 sq yards) – I recently got to know that in a plot, the South west (SW) corner shouldn’t be extended (i.e. this direction should not be extended or have more open space). Unfortunately, in my plot the SW side is extended & has far more space compared to the other 3 corners. I heard that 1 of the problem’ with this is that overall prosperity is stalled & there’d be no growth. Request you to kindly suggest/guide on how to correct this?
    I’d also read that 1 of the remedies is constructing a boundary/compound wall to cut off the unwanted portion – is there any alternative to this (say digging 1 to 1 1/2 feet deep along the SW & SE corners to remove the unwanted SW extension OR laying a copper wire along the SW & SE boundaries?).

    IT is an exceptionally narrow site with a small frontage. A good architect can design a good building on this site, but everything hinges on you getting the right person. Ideally a site with sides(small to big) in the ratio of above 0.6 is preferable. But make the decision based on your instinct.

    This site has odd dimesnions but the difference between them is too much. As a result the effective usable area for a rectangular house will be quite small. That is why it is not considered good. But if you get in touch with a good architect, he can design a house exploiting the site to its best.

    You can. Shermukhi plot is not bad, in fact it is ideal for commercial building as it has more frontage whereas a gau mukhi plot has a narrow mouth and hence provides more privacy to the residents. All this made sense in olden days when plots were huge. But in todays scenario, where the sites are very small, a wider frontage is better as you can derive more light and ventilation from the front. bUt grow some hedges to make the plot seem rectangular

    Though it is extended in the SW, you can look at the positive, it is a gau-mukhi site which is good. You should build a rectangular house within it and build a small wall or grow hedges to make the site appear rectangular.

    Sir, I recently shifted into a rented apartment which has a main door entry towards north east. But it also has a north east portion and south east portion cut. I read about the cuts being highly inauspicious later and am now worried about the prospects. Looking at your scientific explanations gives little relief but many sites list a number of health issues or loss in prosperity which could result from staying in such a house.
    Kindly advise what you think should be done when staying in such a house.

    A SE extension is acceptable by some experts though it is not considered ideal. But since you are constructing within the 30×40′ rectangle, according to me, it is okay.

    First of all good information – thanks. I’m planning to buy 2 adjacent plots, there are two options available – both the options have a projection, please help me in deciding on one or let me know if i want to reject both if it is not at all good
    Option 1:
    Site 1 – South and East facing – Corner site (cut on South east)
    South – 52.6 (Due to the cut)
    East – 25 (Due to the cut)
    North – 55
    West – 35
    Site 2 – East facing – adjacent to the above
    South – 55
    East – 30
    North – 53
    West – 30

    Option 2:
    Site 1 – North facing
    North – 35
    West – 56.6
    South – 35
    East – 53.6
    Site 2 – adjacent to the above
    North – 35
    West – 59.6
    South – 35
    East – 56.6
    Which option would be good, i read that SW projection is bad when compared with all other projections,so confused. I will build a compound wall / fence which will be in rectangular shape. My thinking was to go with option 1 since it has a 40 ft road and being a corner gives me two entrances which suits my long term purpose of building houses for rent. Please advice.

    Like you say, the first option seems to be better, it being a corner site. Moreover by building compound wall to create a rectangular shaped site, the negative effect will be negated. But the final decision is yours. Go by your instinct.

    We are about to buy a land with house which is south facing and it is a shermukhi plot, south – 56 ft and north 50 ft, house built on it is rectangle shape with a car porch, there is a road in front means (east to west) and there is road in east side, please suggest me is this good or not.

    A Goumukh plot is preferable to a shermukh in Vastu. But since you are building a rectangular house, it should be okay. But like I always say, ‘feel the site’ before buying it. If you get a positive vibe, go ahead.

    A rhombus is a square with acute and obtuse angles. You can construct a regular 90 degree house in it but there will be a lot of waste of space. So you need to take the call.

    Namaste, I am planning to buy a plot which is North west facing whose front is of 42.10Ft and rear is 39ft, North east wall is 62.5ft and having a house and South west wall is 62ft having last house with opened space on this side, it is sighmukhi plot, please advise should i purchase it as cost is comparaing to other site is less even if we cut away the extra front portion.

    It appears to be a parallelogram. You will have to construct a regular rectangular house, but in doing so you may waste some space.

    My flat is constructed on a rectangular plot. I am planning to buy the adjacent flat. The West-South-West Corner of the current flat is getting extended, if both flats are joined.

    Hi I am buying a plot for hospital Cum residence purpose.the plot is L shaped
    Front is 30’facing East,back is also 30′ there is extension in the NWest of 33’×33′.Pl suggest remedy. If I plan a gallery from front to back and use the extended portion as patients ward with toilets ..then will the defect be taken care of

    In such a small plot, you must use all the space available for planning a hospital. So use the extension as you have proposed.

    North facing plot 61×105
    80′ Main road on north side & 15′ smaller road on west
    rectangular plot north & south border 61′ ; east & west borders 105′.
    we are planning to sell west side size 28′ x 95′. After that our plot will be 33′ x 105′ with attached north-west corner of 28*10 for access to parking area.
    Plot ownership will be joint because of Muncipal rules.
    Is it advicable?
    Do u suggest any other option?

    This division will create two narrow and long sites, which are not ideal for designing a house. But it is possible, only that the sizes of rooms will be restricted. A more squarish site would be preferable.

    I am planning to buy a NE faced irregular plot with below dimensions,
    North – 33.4′ (Front)
    South – 25.4′
    East – 53.4′
    West – 47.6′
    Please let me know if there will be any problems.

    The front is wider than the back which is not ideal as per vastu. But the dimensions are okay for a reasonably sized house. So you make the decision based on how you feel about this site.

    I am moving my business to new office facing north and it is corner site, the dimensions are north/east to south east 17ft
    north/west to south/west 27ft. east to west 50ft ,
    Kindly advice whether it is good for office business (electronics) if any remedy kindly suggest.

    In small sites, it is imperative and practical to use every inch especially for a business establishment/office. So even though this is an odd shaped site, it can be used for your business.

    A plot of following measurements is suitable for construction of house or hospital

    North 98.5ft
    South 109.75
    West 29 ft
    East 29.5ft
    Road on East side

    It is a very longish and narrow site. It is a a challenge to build a hospital on such a site, but a good architect can do wonders. So you decide based on the intuitive feeling you get about this site.
